Here's a sight not easily or commonly seen - two of the rarest and fastest production M3s ever made. Both the E46 M3 CSL and E92 M3 GTS were lightweight models of the standard M3 with a modest power bump. Each also figured other upgraded components such as suspension and braking.

Only 1,400 of the M3 CSL were produced for its only model year (2004). The M3 CSL was 240 pounds lighter than the regular M3 and featured a 17hp /1 lb-ft torque gain over the standard M3. It was only available in Silver Grey Metallic and Black Sapphire Metallic.

The M3 GTS is an even rarer example, with only 250 units produced. Announced in 2009 and deliverd in 2010, the GTS shed 300 pounds from the standard E92 M3 while adding 36 hp / 30 lb-ft torque.

All this weight reduction lead to some impressive track times. The M3 GTS lapped the Nurburgring in 7:48 and the M3 CSL did it in 7:50, besting many of the exotics available at the times of their release.

Neither model made it into the North American market.

E46 design is timeless. Hopefully the same can be said about the E90/E92/E93 generation in a few years. The E46 won my heart over as a young teen when it first launched. I had an E46 M3 wall with random pics of modded M's all over the place. I said back than, I dont think the car will ever look "old".. one day it will but looking great still!
