Well this is an opinion thread so everyone is giving their opinions lol. Having a newer car with a more miles is better in my eyes. Better tech, less wear on rubber parts assuming kept outside, no 08 flywheel problem, easier to resell when/if the time comes.

[QUOTE=nyc_dude;22993088]"...IMHO Don't buy a 2008 //M3. The e9x //M3 cars were a mid-year replacement starting in about the spring of 2008. They were pre-LCI cars with the old iDrive/Nav. But it was the first introduction of the S-65 V8 which made them unreliable. BMW doesnt have a great reputation for designing and building rock solid V-8s. I think the //M3 S-65 V8s were hand built. So the first year saw many bad engines...Also avoid the DCT, since if it fails = $15,000..."
Good information, thank you. Where are all of the 2008 M3 owners?! Jump in here and defend the first year of the mighty E9x M3!!

I initially bought into the "don't buy an 08 M3" argument, then a guy whose opinion on BMWs I respect said "the 08s are fine" so I bought one. Paid $26K last June for an IB (great color) coupe with DCT. Car had 77K miles, clean Carfax, and a decent history.
I worked a deal with the dealer to have the rod bearings done as part of the purchase. The bearings looked fine when he got them out, btw, but I needed the peace of mind. I then decided to pre-emptively install the gears in the TBA's with aftermarket, and discovered the TBAs were date stamped 2014, so they had obviously been replaced. Popped the aftermarket gears in them. The car, soon after I got it, developed an oil leak from the crank snout seal, so I had the guy who had replaced the bearings do that, as well as change out the DCT fluid and replace the leak-prone DCT pan and seal. All this was done in the first month or so of ownership, and all included things I had planned for, except for the crank snout seal oil leak. Thus, the total price, all in, was under $30 for me. Fast forward, and I'm 10 months in, at just over 90K. I use it as both a daily driver, in deadly Seattle area stop and go, and as a trip car, blasting across the Great Northwest. Since the initial maintenance/repairs, the car has been flawless. I don't mind the iDrive interface particularly, and, since I don't really use most of the other gadgets that much (would be happy with a straight dash car), I don't see much that I care about vs the later models. I do understand, though, that the manual on the 08s was a problem child. My DCT has been fine--I installed the Euro tune. So--my humble 08 has so far, been great. I love the car so much I drive it every day, in all kinds of horrible weather, and it has treated me well. As we head into track season, I have a set of StopTech brakes that will go on, as well as some sticky tires. I suspect it will be a blast on track as well. Terry |

I usually find myself here. Every car has it's own value to a current owner and future owner. After establishing a base (seems like the consensus here is $30k), the unique automobile's condition, mileage, history, color, features, etc. push the value north or south from there. I agree in any case $35k is too high. This specific M3 is worth more to me than $30...likely somewhere in the middle. Here are a few photos...more to follow - this M3 looks NEW! (bonus photo: bro-in-law's DEMON!) https://photos.app.goo.gl/NnrY1d4EqgDemToV2 Thanks, all, for your responses here!

Just for comparison, a local 2008 E90 @ Carmax where i'm from is ~27k ( after tax and $300 carmax fee ). This is with 88k miles, no real indication of service history, and only ~35k worth of miles for Maxcare at an additional 32-3600.
With the all in of 30k for that piece of mind, yet still likely needing a clutch sometime soon, i'd wager your looking at a much better deal on your end, than what i'm seeing locally. |

Lol at buying a newer car with twice the mileage for the same price. you buy a car with 70k and sell it at 100 and you'll have a much less valuable car.... Very hard to sell. You buy a car with 30k and sell it at 60k and it'll sell all day long. It will also be the less used/worn car.

Are there exceptions to that rule? Sure, cars regularly driven in San Francisco, NYC, Chicago or any other area with shit roads may feel worn out by 30K miles, while one driven in an area with really good roads may have minimal suspension wear by comparison at 60k miles. That said, $35-$40K can also buy a relatively low mileage (~40K mile) LCI car nowadays so there is that to consider. An '08 with 25K miles in a desirable color combo should still bring $30K plus though, so i would say you're in the range. If you like the car and it's what you want, and you know the history, i wouldn't worry about spending a couple grand more to get a known quantity. |

A 70k car will be nothing of the sort. Are there very nice 70k cars? Heck yea, I have one (e46m) but it's NOTHING like my 30k car. Paint chips, wear and tear, interior wear, sun fading, and on and on and on. No comparison - you will never make the 70k car as nice as the 30k car without a full restoration which would be stupid. So, for the same money, you can either buy a low mileage mint condition older model OR a higher mileage/more worn car with better tail lights. |

Mileage is king. Some of the posts here are laughable.
Look at this e36 sedan m3 low mile example what sold for, despite paint work and transmission swap non the less. A 100k Mile example is 10-12k at most and we are talking cars with half the horsepower of e9x. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1997-bmw-m3-64/?blm=4 Take notes people |

I bought an 08 with 85k. The rod bearings did show some wear. I did mine at MRF and he showed me bearings from cars with the new type bearings with way less miles that had significant wear.

thanks! yes, it's an amazing machine. i couldn't be happier especially considering the sight-unseen purchase. it may as well be new. i was a bit hesitant because it has 20" 2-piece forged wheels. after driving it a bit (and having an E92 335i M-sport with 19" wheels), i cannot feel the difference compared to 19's. i really love the raw-brushed look of the wheel face and the polished lips...the wheels have a great concave look too. BONUS - this thing has the OEM exhaust mod (cut out perforated pipe - weld in a new pipe version) - it SCREAMS.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/ocX1ejGEATL81EXI2 i may have paid a premium for the mileage, service history, and overall fantastic condition - i can live with it. and a bonus is the $7,000 wheel & tire package. thanks, all.
