This isn't the first time I've dealt with nagging issues from spl arms, from tie rods backing out all the way on track to things just coming lose, even after replacing TI hardware

I guess just always remember to go over every arm before each event just to make sure. Shit happens.

Holy crap!
I'm glad you survived!

Any chance you could share some super up close, in focus pictures of the fractured surfaces of the two half's?
Ideally, a series of photos thru a microscope.

The manufacturer is likely going to ask for them so they can do some crack propagation investigation, and then some FEA.

We are back to stock arms as well after our last aftermarket arm failure.

Really sucks seeing that, glad everyone was ok.

Sorry man. That sucks. Glad the car is a tank though.

For those on stock arms and running low, no issues with what seems like very poor roll center?

I've been waiting for someone to post this so I didn't have to. This was one of my favorite cars I'd see at the track. Here is another one from a bit earlier in the day. RIP

Just don't run the car ultra low if using stock arms. Which to be fair, no one really does run their cars that low from what I've seen. Unless you have some form of roll centre correction, you're better off running the car a bit higher and maintaining proper roll centres then low and having them all fked up.

I was the owner of this car leading up to a few months ago, and built it with the help of great partners including StripclubDJ/Trinity Autosport, TC Design, etc. I figured the photos would make there way to M3P, but they are still hard to look at.

The new owner is a friend, and we were all out at Laguna together this past weekend when the incident occurred during the last session. Just glad all the safety stuff did their job and nobody was injured. It was a hell of a build and progressed quite a bit further after the video above was done.

Ugh ... sorry to see the loss of a project AP3X_FTW and StripclubDJ. Glad the driver is okay, and no personal injury was caused, that's what is important.

I've always been a bit wary with SPL parts. I have some on the rear of my car but that's because the toe on my car is busted with the bloated subframe so....

Shit. I'm glad everyone walked away from this but that poor car! I hope some of it is salvageable.

Yeah, it's for sure the SPL stuff. I have quite a bit more detail about the events as they occurred but it's not my place to reveal the failure modes here, since the information was shared privately.

I'm doubtful SPL says anything publicly. Like most of these small manufacturers they likely don't have any kind of product liability insurance. So they'll run away from this and deny any issues. Which also they look to have some plausible deniability.

I hope I am wrong and SPL steps up and owns this but that's likely not the reality.

Does anyone know if SPL has a service life on these arms?

This isn't the first time something like this has happened, although probably not to this extent. TI hardware backing out, endlinks snapping, etc etc. I've never seen them publicly address anything--doesn't seem to affect their bottom line regardless. I could be wrong.

I have brand new SPL setup and I have close to 30 trackdays scheduled this year. This topic is a real concern for me, I am not just a curious bystander.

There's not enough information being publicly shared at this point to even begin to point blame.

Up until this point, SPL has been, for the most part, widely praised and looked at as the go to spherical arm upgrade for this platform, as well as other non-BMW platforms. For a new arm to fail in the way it did is suspect. Perhaps SPL has changed who is manufacturing their parts or their manufacturing process and they are to blame. Did the driver have an off earlier in the day that weakened the arm, only for it to fail later in the day? Without knowing full details it's useless to start pointing fingers and boycotting SPL already.

Glad the dudes okay. But in my experience situations like this are much more often related to human error (improper installation, not bolt checking frequently, going off track and damaging parts, etc.) that lead to parts failing, not the part itself being the issue. Even the SPL TI hardware isn't that much of an issue if you aren't lazy and actually go over your car before/after a track day. I've only had to tighten them ONCE in the past 2 years of checking them before every track day.

TLDR: Until all the info is posted publicly, this conversation is essentially useless and there's no point in blaming SPL, yet.

It's a tough call... if the expectation is that I'm going to 'check all the bolts before every track day' then the part in question is a no go.

That falls into the same category as the people who rotate brake pads every tire rotation. I guess some people love checking and rechecking, I like things that just work. One of the beauties of the M3 is that it is not a 'glass cannon' that only works under very specific ideal circumstances
