Currently a B8 S4 owner. If I didn't need AWD for my daily driver I would be in a M3. I've driven multiple M3s, and almost pulled the trigger in 2010, but I do a lot of snow driving, and for that the quattro can't be beat. Once you take away inclement driving conditions, the M3 is a better car then the B8 S4. That being said, the B8 S4 is no slouch and far superior to the 335 x-drive in almost every way. It slots nicely between the 335 and the M3. With either the M3 or the S4, you'll be driving a great car that is better then 99% of the other stuff out there. If you don't need the quattro I would do it.

The current S4 is beyond the 335xi. In fact the new S4 with sport differential is on par with the last RS4 which actually did compete against the M3. Not in straight line speed but on the track. Audi did a great job with the sport differential and moving the engine further back. I've brought both my cars to the track and I can tell you the S4 I VERY capable and fun. Check fastest laps below for track times between the 2. http://fastestlaps.com/comparisons/audi_rs4_b7-vs-audi_s4_b8.html

In the states the prices are not thy far off between the M3 and the S4.
In my opinion if you don't get snow where you live (using app so can't tell) then I would get the M3 hands down. If I could only get one car and do get snow then you can't go wrong with the S4 as an all around car that you can track and have a blast with in heavy snow.

I'm in a similar situation. I am cross-shopping the M3 to the S4. Went for a test drive in the S4 and its very impressive. However, you don't feel like a part of the car. I felt almost like I was driving my parents F01, you know its accelerating quickly and taking corners at high speeds but it just isn't exciting and engaging. My little sister has an S5 which she loves, but every time she drives my 135 she comes back saying "as much as i love my audi, its no where near as fun as a BMW"

This should be easy... Do you enjoy visiting the dealer frequently for 'warranty' items?
If so.. keep the S4... If you actually want to drive your car for months and months... years and years... without visiting the dealer... go get the M3. We won't even get into the handling, and performance differences (ie starting with a motor actually behind the front wheels) Dave

Both cars are excellent in my opinion as I went from an 08 e90 M3 to a B8 S4. I have to say though that there was always a part of me that regretted trading the M in. The S4 was just missing something that an M or AMG type car can provide.

Hmmm... Let's see my B8 S4 has only been in for scheduled maintenance and I'm at 35,000 kms. My M3... Been in for metallic noises from my clutch one month after I bought it and they changed my clutch. Been in for fuel door not closing and twice for O2 sensors. Overall you can't go wrong with any of these cars although I cod never understand why someone living in an area that never sees snow buys a Quattro....

Yes... Montreal... I'm speaking from experience... last 'good' Audi in my experience... was the one I raced in 2000 (S4 BiTurbo) My friend then had an '04 A4... that visited the dealer quarterly for 'something'... and then he upgraded to the V8 S4... and that no kidding here... once it hit the 45K Miles mark... went to the dealer MONTHLY!!! For more than a year! guess you have 20,000 KMS until you can weigh in...
And check JD Power... or Consumer reports... Audi's are COMPLETE POS'S... BMW definitely have their issues... the 335 motor didn't help... but other than that... nothing like an Audi product. Great styling for the Audi, and great Interior... just recommend owning for first 12 mos 12K miles... then move on! Dave

All things aside you will take a huge hit trying to get rid of a 2010 S4. You should just drive it until the new M3s come out. Seriously dont do it, you already have a nice car

I had the same problem back in 2001. My dream car was the E46 M3, however I settled on the B5 S4. I was in denial for a LONG time. I lied to my friends and family saying that the S4 was a better car than the M3 and that the S4 was faster. Even after the full stage III conversion, I was still in denial.
I don't know much about the new S4's, but I do know that I have my dream car now and it's one of the best feelings in the world.

Well all cars are weak in the experience department vs. bikes on track, but I still wouldn't call the M3 boring.
