windshield washer fluid leak
I did a search and found a few threads that mentioned this leak but no real resolutions other than the dealer replaced the tank. In order to access this area you have to remove the front passenger wheel. After you have placed the car on jack stands and removed the wheel, start removing the panels. You will need a 8mm and 10mm sockets along with a T30 torx bit. First remove the lower rear corner panel, then the front which has two screws hidden on the right side of the vent, and last the large rear section of the wheel well.
As you can see my leak is at the pump plastic housing where I put the red arrow. I did not replace the pump. The part number for the pump is 67128377430 and Tischer lists it for $72.84. However to stop the leak I cleaned the area with a degreaser and sealed it with Loctite ultra gel control super glue using three coats. We'll see how long this repair lasts. Maybe when I order my next oil change kit I'll include this pump as part of the order. Last edited by Dannys M3; 02-01-2013 at 06:29 AM.. Reason: Correct part number and price |

You are welcome. I am not sure if excessive movement caused the crack or not. As you can see one of the wires is not in the clip. So far the temp fix has held, good luck with your fix and post pictures of your leak is somewhere else.

I too had the same problem. Puddle under right front wheel. Took it to dealer, they said to change pump. Part + labour approx. $200…
Had it fixed just few days ago. Hope it stays that way. |

I assume I have this leak, will look this weekend. I just filled the resivoir with 3.5 litres (max is 4.5 I think from the manual). I already have a low resivior warning and I used the washers once.
Thank you for the write up!! |

Being OCD I had to see where the leak was coming from so I reopened the fender well. I removed the electrical connector, outlet hose and drained the tank. Apparently I had the crack location wrong. After removing the previous attempted repair. I cleaned the area again and applied some liquid penetrant. The crack runs horizontal along the housing. This time I applied a marine/automotive grade RTV sealant. Hopefully this repair will last.

Any chance this made a creaking sound when going over bumps when cold out? I have two symptoms right now, washer fluid emptied right after adding a full bottle and creaking on bumps - could be the reservoir cracked, could be suspension.
Curious as to what you heard if anything? |

I too want to thank you. I have had the same issue and brought to the dealer a while back and they could not detect any leaks.
Luckily it hasn't puddled recently and strangely enough it only puddles in warmer temps (summer for me). |

I replaced my pump after it starting leaking at the seals. This is relatively common. Got my pump for $68. Took 20 minutes to replace. No issue since. Rumor was that if you didn't use BMW windshield wiper fluid, this is common. I was running meth. The new pump had a different P/N than the old one and looked slightly different. I'm not sure if its improved or not.

I just noticed a small blue puddle behind the right front wheel after returning from a long drive on a hot day. I have a service appointment scheduled for Monday morning!

I have an non-M3 E90 but have exactly the same leak as Danny. From what I can tell there was no stress from the wires/hoses on the pump. All of my wiring/hoses were still attached properly (although maybe with the recent battery cable recall work they were in there and fixed it - since the battery cables run right through there). But, it is in a place where if the hose to the nozzles was too tight it could have caused that crack. The replacement pump looks significantly different, maybe BMW realized they had an issue and fixed it.
Total cost of repair for me with my BMWCCA discount is about $60 at BMW of Silver Spring (new pump, strainer, and some fender rivets) plus a couple hours of my time. It's not that difficult a job. Also note, for my car without the headlight washers, the part # is 67127302589. I believe the number 67128377430 Danny provided is for the headlight washer pump: 2008 - BMW - 328I - N51B30A - L6 - 3.0L - GAS BODY HARDWARE / WINDSHIELD / WIPER & WASHER COMPONENTS / Washer pump 67127302589 - Washer pump windshield 2008 - BMW - 328I - N51B30A - L6 - 3.0L - GAS BODY HARDWARE / WINDSHIELD / WIPER & WASHER COMPONENTS / Washer pump 67128377430 - Washer pump headlamp Last edited by Sparkee; 05-20-2013 at 08:42 AM.. Sometimes the issue is not a leak but rather the overflow system discharging excess fluid (which is normal). I found this out after taking my car to the dealer to figure out why I was seeing some blue fluid on my car on a hot day. This only happened after I topped off the fluid in the reservoir (so the heat caused the liquid to expand).

I had this happen to my car as well (a small puddle). However, it hasn't happen since, so I probably filled it to the top and it expanded.

In my case, the tank would slowly leak down to empty. So, expansion of the fluid clearly wasn't the issue. After pulling the tank, I hung the pump between two elevated hoses holding fluid/water, one still attached on the washer jet side the other a hose I had laying around. I could see the water leaking out of the side of the pump at a rate of about a drip every 5 seconds with this arrangement. It turned out to be a good way to prove it was the pump.
I am glad Danny's fix worked too... Last edited by Sparkee; 05-22-2013 at 11:52 AM.. Reason: grammar |

I had this happen on my 05 325i, it seems like those pumps tend to leak over time.. I just replaced mine on my 325i and it cost me like $60.

I had the same problem with my 2007 335i. My leak is identical to Danny's. I ordered p/n 67127302589 from Tischer and am currently waiting for it to come in.
Thanks for the writeup! I would have never figured out where that WW bottle was :-) Pete |

Pump Fix
Thanks for all the great pic's they sure help. I think I have the exact same issue on my Z4 and would liked to try your fix first before buying a new pump. I am a newbie to working on cars at any level and have a very basic question - does the electrical connector on top of the pump just pull straight off or is there a tab or something that I have to push to release it? As I said this is a first for me so I don't just want to yank on it, damage it and then have to replace that too.
Thanks |
