I don't think this is about lap times. If actually going faster were the primary concern, more days at the track would be the first order of business.

Some people just want to build cool cars and that's ok too.

Are you planning on racing or doing time trials?

Not sure what organization you run with but I know NASA doesn't allow active aero in TT or ST classes.

For sure - there's always a ton of head scratching when it comes to how people spend their money. And I think it's safe to say "we've all been there" The best advice I have here is to really dig into your end goals, and if that has to do with competition then build towards that rulebook. If you aren't competing or bound by a rulebook, then the skies truly the limit

Not really. I don't have an unlimited budget, but there are a few things I'm just set on. I've been thinking about them for a long time and now I just don't care.
An active wing from aeromotions shaved 1.5 seconds off an already built Nissan gtr's lap time at buttonwillow.

When I talked to my wife about it, she was happy about selling one of the rentals. I told her the caveat would be building the m3 and spending significant money. I'll be paying off my other rental with part of the proceeds, so I haven't gone completely nuts, it's just time to enjoy the fruits of my labor. I explained some of the things I would be buying and she exclaimed, "another wing!?" Lol yea, this ones is special though.

This wing can also be set to stay static. I'd like to do some amateur competitions in the future which is why the cage spec is important.

Can someone make an active aero wing that isn't super ugly? I've yet to see any that look good.

ah, yes! i'm likely going with the garmin catalyst. i just don't realistically see myself dissecting data at the end of the day. timing, instant feedback, and segments would be more useful. i'm a visual and hands-on learner. data would help figure out whats going on, but seeing whats going on after i get home probably isn't going to benefit my brain.
For what it's worth, I had the same idea as you. Wanted more instant feedback with improvements vs analyzing data at the end of the day. I love my catalyst. Just need to use it more!

Yeah I don't think it looks too bad. Surprised the endplates are so small though.

Something as simple as good looking endplates would make this wing so much better looking. It's not awful but man those endplates are all hard edges/angle and the E9x has so much round shape to it.

Ugly or not, there's nothing cooler than watching an active rear wing go vertical to act as an air brake when you drop the anchors. I was following a McLaren 675LT on a hill run and I swear I grinned every time he got on the brakes.

P1 yes. The LT models, yes. Senna, nope. Some of the OEMs have done it very well, it's the aftermarket that's not so great.

i'm pretty much in the same mind set as roastbeef is. I am just starting to tackle the dream build i imagined for my E92 M3. started off with the engine, now I am working towards the chassis.

with the last bit being aero from which i will be sourcing from my good friend Amir at RSFuture.

i personally don't care for lap times, i am just out there for fun, improvements in my driving is just natural at that point.

It's funny how much fast a fun car can be without being awful to live with, if you choose your mods carefully without regard for some random set of limitations imposed by some sanctioning body somewhere or other

I have learnt my lesson through long study and trial and error not to ruin a good car, and I now have a comfy, 5-place, rad, rowdy car that doesn't break much and can track at will in its street configuration without falling to pieces. The Goodyears were the final piece in that puzzle - finally a track-capable, go-fast tire with really, really good street manners that isn't a billion dollars per tire! I'm in a pretty happy place with my car right now, and weight savings is one of the few places where I might continue to pick away at making it better, and maybe a diff. But based on the times it just did this past weekend, on street pads and street tires, it's a pretty dang fast car without, literally, even changing the tire pressure, because of all that careful planning and careful thought about what I really want the car to be, rather than just doing whatever makes it FASTER or whatever makes it fit into a particular peg-hole. Costs be-damned, this is what I want, I will do it. Sure, I might end up with $30,000 worth of parts on a "$20,000 car" but that's missing the entire damn point.

I applaud everybody who says "F it, I don't care about the ruleset, or the ROI" and just builds what they want.

That's how I feel. My cars will always be street cars. I have no desire for a brutal track only toy that I can't ever enjoy on the street. I do think you can still extract a LOT out of one of these even if you don't fully optimize every last component for the track. At the end of the day I just want something in the garage that I think is a cool ass car.

I've always found the compromise to be almost impossible, at least for myself. Anything that's very capable on track isn't well mannered for the street and visa versa. I also don't get anything out of driving my 'track car' on the street, but I know other feel differently. As a result I've always found myself having full on race cars, or extremely modified street cars, for track use and generally totally stock cars for any street and daily driving.

Perhaps I'd think differently if I was somewhere else and had access to great driving roads (like the canyons), but up here there is absolutely nothing and the roads quality is pretty awful.

The good thing is, the information and the parts are available to do basically any build anyone could want. Whether it's a lightly modified street car, something in the middle, or all the way to a full on track car. Everyone's priorities are different and as long as they are enjoying their car, that's what counts.

I'm with Roast - The build is so fun, and now I only drive my car to / from the track which is sufficient as I have stripped all the luxury from this car. That said I want to be compliant and competitive in the various TT orgs.

Honestly, I still love to take it for a quick spin but after 5 mins on the road I'm just bummed about public roads. So I feel no qualms about having "ruined a good car". I love that when I pull into my driveway from an angle to clear the splitter the opposite corner tilts off the ground. Neighbors are definitely confused

being a CA resident i am blessed and cursed at the same time and im sure we all feel that way also lol.

we got great roads so stiffer chassis and suspension isn't bother some to me.

i still daily on 100-200tw tires and i drive my car every day.

what makes me feel good though is just having my car parked outside my house and seeing people enjoy it as much as i do. i'm sure they hate my loud exhaust though

end of the day, we all have different build paths. for me i can only have this one car so its going to do everything.
