PDAs

I'm in need of something to basically keep track all of things I have to do. I used to be quite bad and over plan things or simply forget things to do. Right now I use my razr and im not crazy about the menus to get there and make a checklist daily of things to do. I really want to step up to something a little more professional and "techy".
However, my contract re-newel is in Sept. so I was thinking a cheap PDA would be great for now, because I could browse the new and also throw games on there to keep me occupied when bored. But I don't know much about them. Any good recommendations for cheap?

If you want cheap it will have to be non-phone. You can get "good" ones for under $100 easily, although they a a bit bigger.

Personally I would get an iPhone, hack it to run on your service for a couple months and then reset the memory on it and get at&t (so you can get updates and such) when your contract is up.

I have a Sprint Mogul and love it. It has ActiveSync with Exchange and all that so I'm updated with my appointments and contacts from my work calendar.

Blackberry. You can get deals on refurbished through your provider or hit ebay. Call your provider, better yet go see them, and tell them you are thinking of switching providers and buying your contract out (It's usually around $175 to do so) because your phone does not fit your needs. Ask them if they can do anything to help you out. I've gotten my upgrade time dropped by over a year with VZ and over 6mos with ATT in the past.

I like the iPhone. It's more of a toy to me than anything else. Fun as hell, though. Just not good for what I need out of a device.

Speaking of Blackberries, the new Blackberry Bold is gorgeous.

I highly recommend the blackberry as well. Especially if the ability to email while mobile is important to you. The integration with your desktop email is so seemless.

Yeah man, join the crackberry team

I actually switched over to BB from Palm Treo...

If you're a texter, Treo has way better texting interface.. Threaded texts are so much more convenient than BB...

But overall, BB is alot better. Smaller, lighter, more reliable and a simple UI.....Lol theres even a very active forum for BB addicts (crackberry.com)

Blackberry. I have the 8820, it's perfect. Considering the Bold when it comes out.

How do you like the curve? I'm watching a few on ebay right now.

Ditto.

Right now I'm leaning towards a Palm, and then picking up a Voyager when my contract is up.

Voyager is a no no, it's a horrible phone, to be honest. I haven't liked LG's products in a very long time.

BB is where it's at, in terms of perfect functionality and RIM absolutely perfecting what a phone needs to have and how to fully utilize it. Any BB phone, with the minor exception of the Pearl (8130), which lacks a fully functional keyboard, would probably be great for you in the long run.

If you're going to be with VZW, they're getting exclusive rights on the new touch-screen BB that comes out (I hate VZW...they'll lock it up like no other, and if it weren't for the great coverage in my area I wouldn't have it), so you may want to look into that as well.

To be honest, I don't really like any of the options right now. The iPhone is nice, but it doesn't work well for business. The first one wasn't made for that, so it's expected. Blackberry's network sucks and you have to rely on back end connectors with Exchange, or desktop sync which isn't practical anymore. Windows Mobile has the best features, everything build in, Activesync, etc, but most devices right now suck. It's pretty much anyone's game at this point.

I see Blackberry as being on it's way out. They were great when they were the only one, but now their methods are old and cumbersome. They certainly wont be gone for quite a while though, there is a lot of corporate investment still, and they are starting to innovate on the newer devices. Either way, relying on their network has proven to be their biggest weakness.

I can say that working on the IT side, the WM devices are a dream for me. Since they have Activesync built in, all you have to do is add all your Exchange settings in the phone and you're done. Blackberry needs Enterprise Server setup and activation on the devices. And the iPhone right now is the worst, requiring you to actually maintain a secondary POP/SMTP or IMAP link to even get the mail. The new v2 firmware will include Activesync though and make them one of the best devices.

So at the moment? Hell, there isn't anything I really like, however, by the end of the year we will have the new iPhone and a couple of vastly improved WM devices to choose from.

Not cheap, but probably fits 99% of your needs

I have the 8800 model now & will be upgrading when this comes out. My experience has been 100% positive with the Blackberry platform.

If you want something integrated with a phone...get any flavour of Blackberry with a full QWERTY keyboard.

If you really want to get something that is seperate from your phone...get something Palm if you want longer battery life. Something with Windows Mobile if you want to download a lot of apps onto it.

I don't think you understand how blackberry works. The "network" to which you are exposed is the providers network. The blackberry network is only as fast as the internet, but they are on a rather speedy connection, so that's not an issue. If you have setup your blackberry correctly, they are going out and polling your SMTP mail, or whatever you have, and then passing that data to your provider, who then sends it over the wireless network. The wireless network is clearly the weak link in the speed game.
