E92 M3 vs C7 Corvette Stingray from Edmunds

Full review @ http://www.edmunds.com/chevrolet/cor...son-test3.html

Summary:

The Final Tally
Of course, there's also the matter of cost. Even if you ignore the one-of-200, already-sold-out Lime Rock Park Edition that adds an obscene $10,000 to the price (for ostensibly different rims, a flat-bottomed wheel and some orange paint), an equally equipped 2013 BMW M3 with M-DCT and the Competition and Premium packages would hit the register at around $73,000.

The 2014 Corvette Stingray 3LT with Z51 package costs $69,375 and includes equipment the M3 doesn't offer like cooled seats, Pandora radio and a head-up display, not to mention its dual-mode performance exhaust and the magnetic suspension. If we're talking value alone, it's no contest.

Now, perhaps one could argue the M3's greater everyday usability justifies some of that price, or perhaps that the Corvette is just a ridiculous, unparalleled bargain. Perhaps one could also argue that the M3 will be out of production in about 15 minutes, effectively reducing this contest to one between a new Corvette and a used, perfectly reasonably priced BMW M3.

One could argue anything they'd like, but there's absolutely no denying that the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is the performance champion here and ultimately the better weekend plaything or extra car in the garage. That's what most people in this segment want, and the Corvette delivers in ways the M3 can't match.

But, in the event you only have room for one car, the 2013 (or any other model year E92) BMW M3 is an impeccably crafted, reasonably practical, sufficiently comfortable daily plaything with the ceaseless ability to thrill on roads both twisting and mundane. Farewell, friend. We'll miss you.

Thanks for posting. Had not seen that and enjoyed it. As a former C6 owner, I am looking forward to giving the Stingray a whirl. Given my needs (little one on the way), I won't be switching out of the M but the difference in performance is tempting.

Great article and well written. Still feel fortunate to be driving my M. Like a fine wine, it's aging pretty damn well! The Stingray is a beast. Kudos to American engineering! But, I'm just not a Vette guy. Congrats to anyone who ends up owning one.

New C7 is awesome and no one seems to be denying that. It's also up against a 5+ year old M3 design. Let's wait and see how the new M3/M4 stack up...

Hmm didn't know Edmunds was still writing anything worth reading but that was excellent. I think they nailed it that the C7 is the winner in all performance related endeavors and the M3 has just a hair more soul and practicality. Indeed the M4 vs C7 will be a very close competition but if you can get over the "look at me" C7 looks and 2 seats, it's clearly as good or better than the E92 M3.

This is the way all reviews should be done, rather than just listing 0/60, 1/4 mile and slalom data they should also have a track time so we get a full picture of the cars under review. Kudos to Edmunds for performing several reviews in this way in the past 2 weeks.

What?! I would never cross-shop an M3 (which is built off of a platform that also produces the 328i and 335i (yes, blah blah xx% of parts shared, blah blah) with a Corvette.

Cayman S would have been the better comparo to the Vette. 2 Seater, purpose built sports car for around $70k.

The best thing about the C7 is that it will force BMW to hold the M4/M3 pricing to a "reasonable" level.

Again, the M4/M3 has no business hunting the 911 in pricing. It will lose miserably.

These are really two different cars. Even the new m3/m4 shouldn't compete against the C7 in any combination of options. Its real competitor is the 911 and the like. I am glad, however, the C7's 80's interior is getting better

The new M4 has a pretty wide wheel base which should give it better grip numbers but it will require quite a bit to get from .93 to 1.05

Wow, finally an article of a car that beats the M3. I'm sure it was getting tired of sitting at the top all alone!

I got to drive around Laguna Seca ballz out with Johnny O'Connell in the new Stingray.

Of course it's a different car than the e9X M3. The amount of grip it had was incredible and stock vs stock, the M3 would not be able to keep up.

However, I have been in a lightly modded e92 M3 that felt equally as grippy, stable and fast as the new Stingray. Malek's (MRF Engineering) M3 which is a 6MT e92 equipped with a tune, catless exhaust, KW clubsports, alignment and NT-05s.

Nice to know that you can replicate the performance with just a couple properly executed mods.

The M3 is nowhere near the same echelon of the 911, especially the 991 and isnt a real competitor in any sense of the word. Even in another year or two when the new f8x m3/m4 are out and the 991 is 4 years old, it still wont touch the 991 in terms of anything performance related, but may come close to the same 1/4 mile. It will provide as it always does a great value and a great alternative given the need for space/practicality to a 911, but will never match the overall experience amongst a list of others things.. The 911 is the benchmark to which they (and all others) strive to achieve, and rightfully so.

Edmunds recently did a review of the 991S and the C7, and both were neck and neck in performance with the C7 putting down a faster lap time but the 911 being faster in a straight line. In the end, the 911 won because it is simply the best and the complete package of the 911 is something no other car in the world can touch. Is the same reason why two years in a row the 991S and then this year, the 991 4S beat out everything under the sun as the best driver's car in the world.

The C7 is a great value and great performer, no doubt. I personally would never buy one though.
