Tire choice for 18x9.5/10.5 for steet and track

Hi all

E92 M3 owner of 1 year. I'm still running on the setup from the previous owner.
I have
Front Apex EC-7 18x9.5 + 265/35/18 PS A/S 3
Back Apex EX-7 18x10.5 + 295/35/18 PSS

As the tires are wearing out, I am thinking about getting a new set for street and casual track days. I saw a dozen recommendation for PS4S for dual purpose. But there is no 295/35/18 for PS4S.

I wonder if anyone can give some advice on the tire choices?

thanks!

Go with Continental ExtremeContact Sports for those sizes. It's a great tire and better value.
.
Or go 285/35 in back and you'll get a lot more choices, including the PS4S.
I though the 295 tires should be a 30 series tire.

I am also thinking about 285/35/18 rear for a whole set of PS4S. I know for sure PSS@295/35 has plenty of tracktion, I can barely push rear out in wet with MDM. I wonder how the driving dynamics will be like moving down.

I will check out Conti too. Haven't thought about anything other than Michelin yet.

thanks

265/35 and 285/35 are mostly what I have run for the past 9 years on 18x9.5/10.5. I first ran the stock tires, 245/40 and 265/40. Then a couple of sets of 265/35 and 285/35. Currently on 265/35 and 295/35. Might try 265/35 with 295/30 or 285/30 next to effectively shorten the rear gear ratio a little — it’s like running a 4.10 in place of the 3.85 on a 6MT car.

COOL. Did you go with same brand/model for the 265/285s or ..? Just wanted to get a perspective on different tires too.

thanks

What tires have you been using?
Is this your street or track set-up?

I drive on the street. Those are my spring, summer, fall tires. I run snows on the stock wheels in the winter.

I have run Michelin PS2, PSS and Conti Extreme Contact. I would try PS4 next if available in my size but I don’t think they are.

One of the best dual duty Extreme Summer tires out there is the Hankook RS-4. 265/35-18 front and 285/35-18 rear was a very popular configuration amongst E9X M owners, however, it appears Hankook discontinued the 285/35-18 size .

Our two other favorites in this Extreme Summer category are the Dunlop Direzza ZIII and Bridgestone RE-71R (faster, but wears much quicker in comparison to the other two), but they only offer a 285/30-18 which is a bit too short out back.

Your best bet is to run the Michelin PS4S (265/35-18 / 285/35-18) and to install adjustable camber plates so you can dial in some negative camber. Not only will negative camber prevent you from roasting the shoulders of the tire, you will improve turn-in and grip throughout the corners. Adjustable camber plates pay for themselves quite quickly and we would suggest approximately -2.5º up front, and -1.8º in the rear.

If you get a bit more serious about tracking the car, we'd strongly recommend switching to a rotatable square setup (18x10" ET25 or 18x10.5" ET22) with 275/35-18 tires. In that size, you have a ton of fantastic extreme summer tire options, as well as r-compounds once you make the jump.

Good info. Thank Ryan.

I plan to go with 265/285-35/18 PS4S for next year and see how it goes.

With this wheel-tire set, what is the recommended tire pressure though. My current setup @38 Bars is giving me more outer wear than center. (Basically my center of the tire is deeper than both outer sides)

On the camber plate, I was looking at SP-GC-CP-E9XM3-S. Do you guys plan to put that on sale for Black Friday too? My alignment with KWV3 is giving me -2.5 on driver side(can't pull in any more for some reason) and -1.6 on passenger side. I wonder for street use, would -2.5 be on the higher side? I expect my self going for ~5 track event next year. It will still be on street mainly.

I think you need to adjust from the stock pressure recommendation when running wider tires. I tend to wear out the rear centers first, which is a sign of over inflation.

I am actually going above stock pressure already. I think the stock is calling for 36/36?

My E90 door jamb says 35/35. I have found that even at 32-33, I wear out the center of the rear tread prematurely. I might try 31-32 next year. On snow wheels now, 255 and 235/40 on stock 18s and I keep those around 32-33 as well. The rear center wear is not as bad with those sizes.
