S65 Destruction

Backstory:

I purchased this engine from a fellow member.

2011 E90 85k miles. He was cruising roughly 70 mph. Realizes that he lost power and the tachometer is at 0. He coasts to the shoulder and tries to restart the vehicle and the starter just clicks. Engine seized.

Ouch! We definitely be seeing more and more mains giving out, but the numbers are stil very low

Was he supercharged?

Was he supercharged?

No he was not supercharged. He did replace the engine and put a supercharger on the replacement.

I believe he was on the original rod bearings. Engine had factory 702/703 bearings.

It is unfortunate so see failures out of the S65.

More and more mains seem to be going. What's the recommended mileage to change the main bearings?

To service them you have to pull out the engine and it’s just not worth it because in labor alone it’s around $4k plus you will be putting in stock mains in there and the same problem will come up

Theory is same as rod bearings. Clearance and tolerance stack. They are in fact made of the same material as the rod bearings.

I always wonder if there is any correlation between the condition of the rbs and the mains. What scares me about your photos is how good the rod bearings look considering the condition of the mains. The rod bearings are worn but not terrible. That one main is so shot. By chance was that #1?

It shows you really cant make much of a judgement call on the condition of the mains based on the condition of the rod bearings.

I changed my rbs. Heres to letting it ride on the mains......

But the alternative can't be to wait for failure right? Cos when it goes, it does so without warning and takes the entire engine with it. In other cars, main bearing failure is usually preempted by low oil pressure warning. In the S65 it appears not to be the case.

Failure rate for main bearings are very rare on non supercharged cars. I don’t think as of yet we should all start to worry about it.

This is a tough one. I would not wait until the motor goes kaboom but its not cheap to address preventively. Can we monitor main bearing wear via oil analysis?

For track people who plan to keep an E46 M3 on track for awhile, it makes sense to keep a fresh spare motor on hand. I plan on annual motor swaps. Its not too bad as far as cost if you keep the internals stock. I plan on doing a basic check - leak down, rod bearing inspection, and look at the combustion chamber/bores with a boroscope.

Kind of harder to justify for an S65 since used motors are still $8kish and I'd be checking the mains too...which means total teardown.

Now THIS is the stuff that keeps me up at night. Like many have done, planning on doing rod bearing replacement soon - BE bearings, ARP bolts. Then to see this, knowing that in spite of my due diligence and preventative maintenance, I might still be kicked in the balls at any moment. I know, there have been very few mains I've seen on here go so far, and you can't live your life in fear. It's just that I want to keep this car till the end of time and I just hate having the main/rod bearings of Damocles swinging above me.
