another reason why I believe the shavings are from the oil Is because the shavings are curved like they came from a drill bit. I don't know if that's a logical assumption but that's what it looks like to me. You can see what appears to be Curled aluminum shavings in the pictures, the same aluminum shavings that were in the pictures the shop sent me while drilling the oil pan.

Honestly I was just trying to get some ideas on how to proceed. I showed my father in law the debris and he said just change the oil couple more times in a few undred miles, drive it, monitor it and wait for a response back from the shop. Guess that's about all I can do.

Those look like drill shavings in the filter. Maybe the shop is not telling you the full story. They won’t admit any fault and you can’t prove any. Probably it’s all trapped now unless some is lodged in the pickup screen. I’d probably change the filter again and inspect it. If it looks fine, then try not to worry and enjoy the car since there is nothing you can do.

If those are metal shavings from something else, you are probably in deep trouble and will know very soon. I’d say that is unlikely. Again, nothing you could do other than take everything apart to inspect - a lot of labor that I think is most likely not necessary.

That's about all you can do. The shavings don't look like they'd be from bearings anyway. Usually you would drill and weld the dipstick mod with the pan off the engine during the RB job. He probably didn't clean the pan very well.

Shop called me back and told me they put the pan though parts wash sprayed it out with air totally cleaned it. they said it was possible it came from the baffle in the oil pan. I wasnt aware that a stock oil pan came with a baffle. i thought that was an after market option used for retaining oil in corners when tracking. They told me to monitor it for another 2500 miles then bring it in and they would pay for an oil change.

Please read the name of this thread again..
The name of this thread is => *Blown motors* Rod Bearing failure S65 Registry

There are already main bearing failures registered in OP's list @aus
I added this case anyway in personal database , because the situation is a blown S65 .
My personal list dates also from 2012 . But my list is much longer...

Well I'm happy and sad reading this thread after a few years. Had to skip my attainable dream car.. still my 335is is plenty fun for now.

Hopefully the M4 won't present major issues like this in the next years when it falls into budget and I'll be able to say I own an actual M car.

Seeing some main bearings go out is the thing that made me not want to take the chance to pay big $$$ for a new motor if it ever went out...

The M4 has been out for long enough that we don't need to rely on hope. You can Google 'F80 engine failure' and see they have their own (rare) issues, such as crank hub failure. If you look hard enough you will find stories of catastrophic failure for every car you can imagine. Hell, my friend's bone stock Honda Civic randomly developed a crack in the engine block which led to a full engine replacement under warranty. All things considered, the S65 is a very reliable engine and I think it's silly to not own your attainable dream car over a few (literally) main bearing failure stories you read on the internet. I guess if you were just looking for an excuse to talk yourself out of it, so be it. The rest of us will simply cough up the $2k peace of mind entrance fee of swapping the rod bearings and drive our V8-powered M cars happily every after.

But that;s the thing, if it would just have been 2k rod bearing job and nothing else ok but looks like it's starting to be the mains to.

That's just statistically false. Main bearing failures have always been and will always be extremely rare. I would bet even rarer than F80 crank hub failure. Don't let a very small handful of anecdotes on the internet warp your perception.

I've been reading threads for over 3 years so I dunno.

I guess I might get one in the future or just skip to the M4.

Negative mate . Why would I ?
Check the name *ellekz* He's more than once in the list . The owner is German and he ran with his *third* S65 by bearing failures !
Here is his thread that includes a video while he had bearing failure (ROD KNOCK) for the second time => https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1080379

I started with my personal database in 2012 . And I can tell you that my list is much longer ..
I can't share more information , because it's requested by the owners (private reasons)
It's a normal reaction , because owners think about the resale value of the car .
Others just dump the car ...
