Chris Harris reviews my next car, the 991 GT3 (well in a few years... :D)

Chris Harris (as usual) is the first to (pre)-review the new 991 GT3. Solid review and this is most certainly my next car in a few years - once I've run the M3 to as fast as it'll get to on the track.

I agree with him. Should have been offered in 6MT.

I agree - it should have had both PDK and MT as options ... I wonder if they'll relent and bring in a MT in a year or two.. maybe on the RS version?

hard to argue with this, Id say the same thing.

huge disappointment. this would have been a car id look to pick up used in a few years, but with PDK no chance.

agreed. they should have at least offered the option of a manual. Porsche is obviously trying to take a hard line and tell everyone that the dual-clutch gearboxes are the way of the future and there's no point in looking back.

that doesn't tame my lust for the car, though. it's amazing the way that engine sings at 9k RPMs. makes me sad to think about how that kind of noise will not be available with the new M, since the GT3 will be out of my price range for the foreseeable future. so while Porsche may have sold out a bit in not offering at least a manual option, BMW is selling out even bigger by abandoning the high-revving engine. that's my opinion, anyway.

Its just the way the future is. Everything is pretty much gonna be Semi-automatic.

As a big Porsche fan, and undeniably Porsche makes the best 6mt/7mt in the world, I also think this PDK is so robust and so well thought out youll forget manual even exist with this car.

I wonder if the GT3 RS will offer a manual. I also wonder if they will push the 3.8 further as the RS should push 500+ hp.

After having a 6mt e92 m3 and now a dct e92 m3, I have to admit the dct has all but converted me...still love a nice heel toe downshift but for the m3, the dct is the better transmission.

Overall though, the 991 GT3 looks to be a car that will easily surpass even the RS 4.0 in every way, and we all know that car and even the reg RS was second to none.

I've driven plenty of stick cars but the level of involvement took away from pushing the cars' limits. I would appreciate a 6MT in a car with less power and a lower level of overall difficulty more than a 500 hp rwd race car such as the GT3. As advanced and as powerful and fast as some of these cars have become, it's only logical for the transmission to advance as well.

You make a great point. This is exactly why some reviewers mention that the current generation M5 works much better with a DCT than manual transmission. At high power levels with fast revving motors, you may spend more time thinking about shifting (with a manual transmission) than enjoying the power.

That is the shame of it all. As much as I love manual transmissions, I cant deny that DCT transmissions are better in every way.

It's all personal, I really struggle to understand why this concept is so hard to grasp.

Some people get more enjoyment out of a true manual, like myself. I can certainly understand how both transmission types can appeal to people, I just prefer a real manual. There is nothing anyone can tell me that would convince me otherwise.

It's a real shame that both transmissions aren't offered to cater to both types of drivers.

Seriously? Who cares?
Edit: oh, you made the "mmmmm" thread and are pissed a properly titled thread is taking possible post and view counts away from your thread.

I agree. When I had my 6mt e92 m3 I always said I didn't want DCT. Had a bunch of friends who made the switch and all it took was a short test drive with DCT and I was hooked. It not quite as engaging as a 6mt but it gets you 95% of the way there and the performance advantage is undeniable.
