Break-in question
got to drive a melbourne red wtih beige coupe yesterday. all i can say, is amazing! have never driven an M3 before, but mine is on a boat--about 3 weeks from delivery.
question, the CA told me the car is "dialed back" to around 300 hp for the first 1200 miles and that this is done electronically. havent heard of this before. he said you bring it in for first service and they take care of it then. is this accurate? even with only 300 hp under foot, it was unbelievable. car had extended leather which also looked great. no carbon roof though... |

I'd ask the dealer to show you some written BMW literature that says the engine is "dialed back". Sounds like BS to me. How are the dealers going to sell a car to prospective customers without impressing them with the entire 414hp that the car is capable of?
The experts are probably the service department. I'd ask the service manager. I have to raise the BS flag.

The only "dialing back" I'm aware of is that the rev limiter is set to like 7,000 if there is no road speed sensed. This is done to prevent overreving (engine revs extremely quickly with no load).

ee2, time to challange the idiotic statements of your CA.
It really bugs me when CAs make crap up. Especially a BMW CA.

Well cool, once we get full power we'll be able to get 3.5 0-60 times and 10 second 1/4 mile tiimes stock. Its amazing the tests have gotten such good performance on dialed back cars.
I hope the first 1200 miles goes fast.

3.5? where are you getting 0-60 in 3.5? ....also ask your rep and he will tell you they come pre-ran in. almost all high performance cars are.

I figue all the cars that the magazines test are low mileage cars since there aren't many in the US anyhow. Therefore (per laszlo) they are being tested at less than full power. So when they test at full power we'll be seeing times under 4.
Its all sarcasm.

BS for sure The dealer I was at today had a break in sticker on the windshield (as I mentioned in another thread) saying 1200 miles @ 5500 RPM limit. I took it to 6k a couple times accidentally, but im sure it will be fine. |

well I would only agree with the SA if you in fact never reved the car over 5k rpm. Because it feels like about 300 or so HP at 5k +/-. But the engine limited to 300hp? BS... I can feel it wanting to be pushed harder when I get to 5k rpm. I just cant give her the satisfaction yet.

Hey youngmsix, what about all M3s already in circulation here in Europe which have been through the break-in period? By the way, we had our first service (thus after the break-in) last Friday and NOW we can truly unleash the beast

i just don't understand this whole idea of pre-ran in. does that mean somebody sits in the car at the last stage of production and turns the engine on and lets it run at different rpms? or maybe somebody at the dealer drives it around and then drives the same number of miles in reverse to get the odometer back to zero? haha. i've obviously heard the break-in debates, but pre-ran is new for me.

I'd love to know if BMW "pre-runs" their engines from the factory. I cannot see why they wouldn't. I know that Ferrari takes them on the track immediately after production and runs the snot out of them (you may have even seen their factory show on television recently...BMW and Corvette also had their factories shown on the same series). I can't help but thing the 1200 mile break-in applies mostly to the gears and transmission. Just my guess.

Total BS....but I can tell you that the "Power" button button which regulates a quicker throttle response is disabled until the 1200 mile service.
