Borla ATAK Reviews

Good morning,

Thinking about getting the Borla ATAK and was wondering about some of the reviews on here from current/past owners. Would the ATAK have any effect on my car passing smog? Is there a noticeable difference in power as well?

Just the rear section should not effect smog as you will still have all your cats.
Most rear sections do not provide much power gain.

No difference in power. Will pass smog. Sounds great. For me in a 6mt slight drone @75-78 mph. Other than that I think it's great and even within those mph it's quite reasonable.

Cold start can be brutal if you have picky neighbors.

It makes a hell of a good noise, though!

I too have the ATAK and agree with the other members. Yes to smog, I've passed mine twice. Yes to drone at 75, but livable. No to more power, but that's with any catback. And yes to cold starts. They are loud, but real real good.

Good trick? Park next to F8X. Start car. Watch reactions.

I have ATAK.

1. The tips are ugly and have the Borla logo. You don't really think of Borla and German performance cars. I think of old muscle cars from my youth.
2. At highway speeds (I'm DCT) it doesn't so much drone but rather is noticeably annoying. Not for me as much but my wife. It's just a bit too loud for 70mph for an hour of driving.
3. D2 lazy commutes in traffic it's actually really quiet.
4. S6 3 to 2 downshifts will get people to look and is a lot of fun.
5. ATAK made things rattle in my car that didn't before. I'm looking at you e-brake handle area. Has anyone dealt with that?
6. I coded out cold start. I valet park in underground parking at the office and it was embarrassingly loud. I also coded the rev limiter to be even lower on cold start to prevent the possible negatives of not using cold start.
7. Cold start sounded more like a tractor than a high performance v8. I liked it, but that's me. I have neighbors and it just wasn't worth it.

I originally was going to do OEM mod but I couldn't find anyone to do it. I kept the OEM muffler so some day I will just do it myself. For those of you parents with young ones, you know how hard it can be to find time to do things like break out your welder and hang out in the garage all Saturday...

In the end, you'll like ATAK if you want a well behaved exhaust system with a few drawbacks. I don't think you'll hate it but like me, you may question the purchase down the line.

Hi Simple, sounds like we ended up having similar thought here. May have seen my personal summary here: www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1457106

Easy enought to change back box around though!

My track buddy has a Borla ATAK. He's catless so the popping downshifts coming off the front straight are delicious.

No idea how it's like living day to day but fuck if it doesn't sound amazing at the track.

Even my straight piped is envious.

I have the ATAK with a catless xpipe and can add this;

1. Its a glorious noise, You'll never get tired of downshifting or WOT pulls.
2. The drone is negligible in my opinion. At hyway speeds it's slightly more than my old MPE.
3. You won't gain power.
4. You won't regret it. Seriously. I've had 6 different exhaust set ups, and this is by far, my favorite.
5. They are usually on sale somewhere. Just shop around and Im sure you'll find a deal.

Eh, I get it. I had a Borla ATAK when I had my Camaro too.

Turner Motorsports used to be sponsored by Borla when they ran E92 M3 race cars (not sure if they still are sponsored by them), they ran Borla exhausts on M3 race cars, so it is good enough for me in belonging on an ///M car.

I think it would be worse with like a Corsa or Magnaflow exhaust. Those are more Muscle car to me only to me.

Besides Borla's quality and metal quality is kind of high in my opinion, based on having two exhausts for two seperate brand cars.

My ATAK also makes something rattle by the handbrake area I don't leave coins in there anymore it gets really annoying but overall I love the system minimal drone and it has a nice throaty tone to it.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but I have a question. I agree the tips are ugly. For the OEM exhaust, you can pull the rivets and change the tip. Is that the case with the borla atak too? Can I change it or is it welded on there?

It’s welded, and with some curvature where it’s more complicated than just making straight cuts and welding on new universal tips
