Clearcoat correction or beyond?

This appears to be clearcoat damage, but it is smooth to the touch. I think it's beneath the clearcoat. I read BMW is not spot-on with prepping the panels before paint, and that's what I'm dealing with here. I made a few passes with DA and reluctant to cut any further to try and smooth bc I also read BMW skimp on clear coating. I have a few spots on my top panels I'd like to polish out. Does anyone have experience correcting this and how? I guess I can drive to my local body shop, but I'm bored tonight, and haven't posted here in years Thanks for the tips!

Whereabouts is that? It looks like a repaired rash mark to me. I’ve never seen something like that for OEM quality on a bmw

That looks like indention's into the metal. I don't think any paint correction is going to help there. I've never seen anything like that though.

That panel has been repainted and the damage was not repaired/prepped very well.

You'd need to have the whole panel resprayed.

It's the trunk lid, just off center. Damaged and repaired? Possibly. Not properly prepped from factory prior to paint looks more in line. Your spot on re: proper prep/respray as ultimate remedy.

Good nugget. Most non metallic paint is NOT clearcoated, except AW. This info noted as I would not attempt to polish this mar any further, risking burn

Trunk lid. Just off center right.

That looks like a bad prep job. Someone half-way sanded the area, and sprayed right over their bad prep. Will need a do-over, unfortunately.

The factory would never let something like this slide.

I see this all the time in my industry (auto body repair), this is poor paint prep work proir to repainting the panel.

Now that being said, this doesnt always mean a PO had an accident. Every large auto shipping company has an in house body shop that repairs shipping damage before delivering new vehicles to dealerships. most of the time this goes undocumented....

I'm scrutinizing my trunk lid, and see no other signs of repair or paint work. Color is on point, orange peal matches hood, and no overspray underneath. With this in mind, it's hard to believe they'd overlook prepping the surface b4 prime and paint. Your theory makes the most sense to me, and I guess I gotta deal with it. Fortunately it's almost invisible under natural light. Thanks.

PS. I made another pass with the wheel for a goof, and the results are non existent.

Alpine White is 3-stage, not 2-stage, AFAIK.

Oops, that's what I meant -- two stage, not single.
