PS2 Traction

Anyone have serious traction issues when the tires are cold/it's cold outside? I find these PS2's to have a much harder issue with getting traction in the cold compared to other tires.

PS2 are pretty useless in 45 degree and lower temp. They get rock hard.

Are you serious?!?! I'm so sorry to hear that. Are you okay?

Do you think the PS2's lack of grip in the colder temperature was a contributing factor in the accident?

That sucks man. Hope everything is alright. The first thing I did was switched the tires to Yokohama Avan S4's.

If it was a warmer night (60+) or had I already been driving for a few miles with the tires warmed up I would've been fine. Sadly I forgot how shitty the PS2's are when they are cold/cold outside and lost control

i've had problems from 60 degrees downwards
since i bought my car the temp has been 60 or below
and i have made slip slip quite frequently
and i don't slam on the gas
i think by summer they mean 70 and above
which is contrary to what it says in the manual
that they are good till 40 degrees

I lost the back end once with MDM on and temps at about 38 degrees. I left DSC on after that. And recently I got a set of snows (coincidentally I drive almost exclusively in MDM on my snows).

Unfortunately, I have to agree with what has been said. They don't grip for shit when it is cold, but you cannot deny that they are awesome when it's warm. I thought about getting snows for Nov-March, but I decided to park it and drive around in the quattro with snow tires instead.

Sorry to hear

I had the car drifted one lane to the left (DSC on) upon making right hand turn entering the freeway at 40 mph after I just left home for 5 minutes. TIres was definitely still cold and I did not know at that time PS2 was that bad during cold temp.

It never happened to me using the E36 with Pilot sport and Toyo T1-R, or even E30 using BFG Gforce at same speed

Sorry about the car. I agree about the poor cold performance, useless when it's cold out, but unless it's icy I haven't had problems with DSC on. Did you have DSC on, or MDM?

Sorry to hear this. Hope others can learn from this. Believe it or not, there are people on this forum that still don't believe this can happen (DSC on or off - doesn't matter really here) just because they got lucky when driving on PS2s in the cold. It's not about skill. It's about luck. Even at slow speeds and careful driving the back can snap out. It's very unpredictable. Some will learn the hard way still...I've seen it firsthand myself on Porsches...There are laws of physics, friction, and grip. No matter how good a driver, you can't break these laws. You may get away with it a few times and think you are good, but sooner or later....A friend of mine who used to race Formula Ford with me in SCCA, and was a pretty damn good driver, totaled his C2S the same way.

And to those that say you can warm up the tires so they are driveable, no you really can't. You won't get enough heat into them unless you start doing laps around the block and brake hard. It's not possible. Don't think you can spin them a bit, get heat, and then you'll be OK. You won't.

Hmm..... 43 degrees out DSC off on PS2's. I am sorry to hear that and I hope that you're ok. The PS2's are dedicated summer tires, even when it's warm you can still break the rear end loose in our cars.
