The resolution and light is not perfect when looking on my phone but the bearings seem to me to be worn though several layers, although I cannot see copper. My bearings had copper on the parting lines and down some sides at the same mileage but no copper in the center area.

ya they aren't too bad, still had some life left in them. But definitely more wear than a typical engine at that mileage should be.
See this page on clevite website to compare bearing wear https://www.mahle-aftermarket.com/me...s-brochure.pdf |

No, it's not...You've been staring at S65 bearings too long.
Normal bearing wear well into 100k+ miles should look like what Toolshed posted earlier- no wear past the first bearing layer. |

I think what we see in our rod bearings wear is oil starvation, according to this article.
I have noticed they say that lugging the engine may lead to oil starvation and to me it seems like a reasonoable cause. I can see all these people who complain about lack of low end torque in s65 flooring the car at 1,5k rpm in higher gears

And don’t forget the E90 was sold with 1.6 and 2.0L naturally aspirated four cylinder motors that made only about 150 lbs torque. That said, I certainly don’t recommend lugging any engine and agree the S65 is a low torque high revving motor that does not have the off idle torque of the typical large displacement V8. The very high compression ratio for port injection pump gas makes detonation a greater risk and I am not 100% confident in the ionic knock sensors that BMW experimented with on this motor (and the S85) and no longer uses. |
