I think part of the discussion missing in the E9x-F8x debate is that the new generation of M's appear to be losing the uniqueness edge that they had over their competitors, and a main reason is switching to turbos. It is one thing to argue personal preference of each generation of M's against itself, but for each generation of M it had "something" that was special versus its competitors that the competitors lacked. The car gave a regular joe the chance to experience what it feels like to drive a race car but in an everyday price, trim and package that its competitors could not match (if you believe the general consensus of professional comparisons that had the M repeatedly winning head to head battles.)

With the next generation, that "something" seems missing. There are a lot of opinions of the next generation, but one thing I have not seen from any review (and it just may be a small sample size) is, "man, this engine (chassis, transmission, etc.) is very special from any other engine (etc.) on the market".

I am partial to the M tradition and I hope that as more reviews come out, I am wrong and the new M can continue its dominance over the competition...but if the new M is no longer special in comparison to its competitors, then, setting aside the M generational comparisons, that would be the true disappointment.

It seems that after the initial excitement, some of the reviews and comparos of the M4 are not as good, e.g. C63 vs M4 (2nd place in two reviews), Vette vs M4 (M4 2nd), M4 vs 911 and GTR (M4 3rd) F-type vs M4 (M4 2nd). I think the E9x lost about that many comparos over 7 years (and was still winning them in 2012 and 2013, the latter with Edmunds giving the M3 a subjective win over the Stingray due not to performance but the "special" feeling that you talk about). With the prior gen M3s, and even M5s, they represented a quantum leap over the competition. Now the competition has caught up or surpassed BMW across not just the M4, but over many parts of the product line (recall C&D saying that if an F30 and E90 335 were in a head-to-head, the E90 would win). Porsche is a great example of this, with a huge leap from the problematic 997 to universal praise for the 991 and CS.

Exactly my point; I don't hate the new M3/4, in fact, for the sake of the M brand and BMW, I want to read that the new M3/4 is special and still tramples the competition. Unfortunately, you are not reading this in the reviews. The tri turbo idea floated initially would have been different than the competitors, but it didn't happen.

I also don't understand what the whole argument is about.

The F8X will never feel like an E9X M and an e9x m was criticized by the E46 forums when it started out with the V8 motor. Each new generation car represents the direction the brand is headed in at that exact time but also a sign of the times the market is in. No need to rain on someone else's parade because the new car doesn't scream to 8500 rpm or handle like an E30 M.

Pretty much new generation phobia and people being resistant to change, or not wanting to accept it.

Don't agree here since the 997 was universally praised. It's just that the 991 took Porsche themselves as the benchmark which the 997 was for as long as it was around and raised to bar to a level where everyone is still trying to catch up even though it's been out for many years now. The 997 as the benchmark was an epic car but the 991 is just in a different world altogether.
