iDrive not recognizing Iphone 4

Hello all,

I hope this is the correct section for this question. About a week ago, my M3 stopped recognizing my Iphone 4 when I plugged it into the auxiliary/USB cable in the center console. When I plug it in and scroll over to the auxiliary tab, it does not bring up my music as usual but it still charges my Iphone. In order for it to play music, I have to go to the music app and press play to get the musci to play through the car speakers. Once it's playing, the up and down arrows on the steering wheel no longer change the song and the i Drive still does not detect my Iphone 4. My friend who has a 335i said that his car did the same thing when it was time for a software update. I have a 2008 M3 that just went out of warranty a little over a month ago. What is causing this issue?

Thanks in advance

Sounds like only the analog audio and USB power wires of your Y cable are working; failure of the USB data wires would explain your phone charging while still not appearing in iDrive and control signals from the car (skipping tracks) not reaching the device, which is why you have to start music from the phone. Maybe try another Y cable?

I had the same exact issue but after the third restart it started to recognize the iPod . Planning on getting a new cable soon as mine gives a static sound with only one side speakers playing when I first attach the iPod but after a few minutes it's fine.

Don't buy another y-cable, upgrade to a 5.

You'd still need a Y cable with a 5 in the OP's car. Only 2011.5 and later cars can use the normal white cable, and that would work with any iPhone.

I have no problem with my iPhone 4, however, I never plug it into the car.
