I just spoke to the sales manager at South Bay BMW, he said he's going to get in touch with BMWNA to see if they can put the Euro seat bottoms in. I told him I'm buying a $70,000 car that has standard 3 series seats and I want exactly what I was told I was getting. It's not fair to the buyer to have the car show up as misrepresented.

I just spoke with some sources and about 1.5 year ago the US Safety standards was changed for seats in the event of a collision so that the front seats would not be too rigid and break apart if impacted.
This apparently caused a lot of manufacturers to change seat designs. I am assuming that this is most likely the cause of the seats for the US bound M3's since it is not typical of BMW to offer different seats for US models. BMW NA obviously did not want to hold up the production of these cars just for seat bottoms which would hurt sales of the company so they found the temporary & immediate solution with the 335 sport seats. My guess is that the euro seats will be available to US cars in 2009 models. Hope this helps. |

as ridiculous as it sounds, this almost makes me want to wait until the seats are standard to order. I would be seriously pissed off if next year they added the better seats. I love the way my seats are now in my m3, and I still slide around a bit, im only about 125lbs. Ill be all over the place in these lame 3series sport seats.

Happens to every high-perf euro car. Gallardo Superleggera, Aston Martin DBS, Porsche GT3-RS, M-B CLK Black Series, Audi RS4, R8. just to name a few. disapointing, all just because they dont have side airbags

Any update on a group buy for the seat bottoms? If so, I'm in.
Perhaps we could get some of our European friend to help us out with this.

I sat in the M3 today at the dealership. I was very dissapointed by the lateral support provided by the seat bottoms. There is more support in my wife's E36 328 convertible w/sport package than in the M3 seats.
I'm kinda bummed about it actually. Great car, lousy execution of the seat bottoms. I really need to get the non-US seat bottoms. What did Canada get?

Seat Bottoms
I just took delivery of my e92 M3 yesterday afternoon. Remember all the complaining about Euro seats being too tall? Well after putting 300 miles on the US spec car overnight, I have to say that I had no problem getting a great seating position. Yeah, they aren't quite as pretty, but that's my only complaint.

Spike, My comment was about the side bolsters of the seat bottom being too short with not enough lateral support for aggressive turning. However, I'm sure the seats are comfortable enough for long trips.
Can you explain what you mean by the complaints of the seats being too tall?

Spike, thanks for the reference, I wasn't aware of the seat height complaints. Perhaps BMW actually reads the threads and makes changes.
Wouldn't that be nice if it was actually true?
