I understand what you mean, I guess I'm being too anal.

I love the 991 GT3's man you are lucky! I used to work for Porsche and loved when customers would bring their' GT3's in. A truly amazing car. That and 991 Turbo S's

The thing is, this drop in value is on paper and hypothetical. It's like seeing that your $50k worth of TSLA is down -17% YTD. Unless you're forced to sell your car anytime in the next couple years, it probably won't affect you and even if it did, you probably wouldn't have any comparables to even know it.

You are already a tail on the curve with regards to low mileage engine failures and you're not likely to have another one.

So, the worst part about this is that you're not driving your M3 for several weeks and won't be compensated for that other than lackluster updates from your SA and a crappy loaner car that will make you appreciate your car more.
Very true, however I actually dont mind the new 328!

I'm agreed with you ..
But you need to read OP's post again (only two words) in the "Failure part"=> "Metal everywhere" !
So I'm 99% sure I and also you know better what can be wrong with a S65 after reading that last line
But only 3K on it....Oughh !?!? Think that's a world record for our S65

The market disagrees with you.

Most consumers look at the records, find "engine replacement" and immediately walk away.

Even if the story checks out, at the very least, it's much easier to sell a no-stories car.

And even if I had no prior intentions of selling the car anytime soon, something like that would wipe clean all my warm and fuzzies and I'd probably want to get rid of it.

I feel your pain !
I really...really do , because for the last 2 years I'm listening to S65 videos from people from all over the world after S65 ticking and rattle noises ,to track down possible bearing failures
And from my experience I can tell you it comes better too early than too late!
Your case was too early and that's really sad ...But you're covered at least by BMW warranty and that's the good part of it ..
Because most of us are out of warranty !
Look my friend..
We saw bearing failures , builds from 2007 and up to 2013 and we saw some fail with - 10K on it and you are sadly part of it .
But we saw also S65's with 100K or even with 200K or more on it !
So the only thing I can say and like I always do on here ...There are really good S65's but also really bad S65's and from out the German factory !
But I'm 100% sure your new engine is good , failing again ?
For me personal that chance is equal to "0"
Like I said above...Enjoy your new S65 because it's really an amazing and powerfull engine

Don't scare the poor man off Phil.... I'm sure he gets to read all he want about the infamous rod bearing in time anyhow. For now he needs a new engine and start enjoy.

I don't think that low yearly mileage is automatically a problem. My S2000 gets just over 1k miles a year as a "weekend" car. It gets an oil change at least yearly and isn't driven on very many really short trips (typically about 20 miles per start).

Car is now 11 years old and runs great. Low miles might be a sign of neglect or an issue, but it's not automatic.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal, OP.

Nik , That's exactly what I said in my statement above .
The man can read too and he is on Bimmerpost and posted his failure in our thread for it .
But..He's good to go and with 0 risks .. And he should enjoy his car for sure

Sorry OP that is a bummer. Yeah your car is no longer pristine you should definitely get rid of it. And you are in luck, I will happily buy it from you once the motor gets fixed

the value would not decrease at all, in fact you are getting a brand new engine and you can break in yourself. unless you are planning to hold onto this car for 20 yrs to sell as collector item, dont worry. everything is fine. the only problem is breaking in the engine, driving it very slow for 1-2k miles is painful.
Just make sure, you dont pay a dime for it and get everything documented by the dealer and get a copy for yourself. Enjoy the ride.

Do you have the service records which show the vehicle was broken in correctly with the first 1500 mile service?

sucks, i would ask for buyback from dealership if possible. I dont want a car that has engine broken down in 3k miles. Wait, did it have proper 1500mile service?

I really wouldn't worry about the carfax. There is nothing you can do about it now. You don't even know if it will be picked up or what the entry would say. Those things are notoriously wrong and incomplete. Just drive it and enjoy it - at least they're covering the repairs under warranty.

Sorry to hear about the engine. Did you get a key read when you purchased the car? I'm wondering if the car was broken in properly; 1500 mile service. Was the car a demo, a BMW driving school vehicle, driven like it was stolen; revved before the oil was warm enough ? Maybe abused by the kids while the adult owners were away? Ferris Bueller

I would want to know the history an why the few miles.

The previous owner was a 65 year old doctor who collected cars. the 1500 mile service was completed. He traded this M3, a F-type R and Lexus something F-sport in all with under 3k miles. I dont think the motor was ever actually broken in but the service was completed.

Look my friend.... it's not only BMW !

Long story in short from last year of my friend and his "brand new" Toyota Rav4 ..

He ordered a Toyota Rav4 and after 2 months the Toyota dealer called him and said your car is tomorrow ready for your personal delivery .
So he went to the dealer and payed the car .
And he drove the car to his home to show the car to his wife , but he never made it to home => "It was only 12 miles "!!!
Engine started suddenly to make a strange and loud noise while he drove only 40-45 mph !
The Toyota engine was completely stalled and he caused almost an accident in traffic .

Engine was of course replaced under Toyota warranty..No problem with that .
But now the new engine consumes oil and a lot of oil , he needs to add 1-1.5 liter of oil every 1K miles..
Toyota dealer don't find the problem and after at least 7-8 times my friend needs a lawyer now , because Toyota refuse to replace his engine again !

And Toyota is probably the most reliable engine builder of the world..
That's why I said above it's "not" only BMW !

That really sucks on such a low mileage motor. As you know, there is a small percentage of S65's (and S85's) which will self destruct, yet others have 200K+ miles and are still running. It is very unfortunate for those S65 owners, but luckily in your case, you have a warranty - many others paid out of pocket. Hope you are back on the road soon and enjoying your M3.
