I've since July and it's unbeatable at that price. I got a shop to do it (provided them with the DIY) for $300. Painted the unsightly can with black paint and my car sounds perfect. Yes, $300, not $3000. That's a no-brainer for me.

I love my M Performance exhaust, been really happy and as others said
it has developed a richer tone over time. When putting the power down there's a distinct bass resonance near 3800-4k on mine that puts a spring in my step, really sounds cool and exotic. Perfect amount of aggressiveness and fairly tame when you want it to be. If sound quality is your objective and don't mind spending the cash then you can't go wrong. ~Axis

I reaaaally like the MPE but $3k for 20 lbs of weight savings over the rear axle and a change in sound is a little much. If I had oodles of money it would be a no brainer for me, but I think I'm going to go the oem mod route and put my money into other areas of the car that actually affect performance.

I absolutely love the sound, looks and light weight of the M Perf! It's a top shelf exhaust. I've never heard any drone out of mine and I'm super sensitive to it. As with any purchase, cost is subjective.

The OEM perforated pipe mod is the best bang for the buck. If you really care about losing weight, then use the savings to reduce unsprung weight, in the form of some lighter wheels.

I don't think they sound quite the same. I compared mine directly with a two pipe OEM mod car at a meet last spring. They do sound much alike though and I thought the OEM sounded fine. I had planned on going that way myself but this was exhaust number three trying to find something both my wife and I can live with and and she was mucho leery of me modding the stock cans since I've done it before to considerably louder effect on other cars. Almost cant blame the poor girl for doubting me...
Anyhow while they do sound similar the M perf has a metallic tone to it that isn't really matched by the OEM mod. This isn't something that shows up free revving but out on the road while driving. I'm thinking its the material that does it but whatever the case may be its there. The fellow I rode with also went for a spin in my car and this is something we both agreed on, it wasn't just me trying to rationalize my coolaid. At any rate you do get something for your money when you drop ching for the M perf but whether its worth it depends on the person I think. I thought the OEM mod sounded alright and gave the car a noticeable increase in sound quality/quantity without bringing anything bad to the table for a whole lot less money. In my mind if you're fine on the spend then get the M, if not go OEM mod. In either the case if you're talking the two pipe mod or the M it doesn't add a great deal of sound volume so I could see some people being underwhelmed with both. |

Agreed. Only by changing to CAT delete pipes gives the loudest sound. No matter which muffler you use, there is not going to be as loud as going CAT-less.
By the way, Eisenmann makes Inconel muffler that cost 5,355 Euros. That makes M Performance Exhaust a bargain. Inconel material is used for F1 and race car exhaust. Ever wonder why they don't use titanium instead? Check out: http://www.eisenmann-sportauspuff.de...onel-Titan.php Quote: "Titanium was then - Inconel Alloy is now!" |

I have a MPE and love it. When I first installed it, I didn't have one of the connecting pipes seated all the way and thought it droned pretty bad; reseated it and tightened the clamp and have enjoyed it drone free ever since.

I know, but they would do a lot more performance wise than a lighter exhaust. Every pound (or ounce) of unsprung weight that you lose has tangible benefits.

I remember a few years ago I saw on a forum a fully modded Infiniti G35 with forged Volk rims and, guess what? Wearing Nankang tire. My point is, if every bit counts, go for broke and get full forged wheels and lightweight exhaust since they are both expensive anyways. |

Agreed..think MPE sounds like nothing out there on M3s, especially while you're driving it. There is nothing "bolt-on" about it, it enhances all the unique sounds of the S65 (and creates some new ones too at higher rpms)...it should have come with the car to begin with (even if it meant higher sticker price).
For those in the "pay only for performance" camp, there are quite a few cat-backs that result in power/tq losses in low range of powerband for whatever reason (maybe not optimized to balance backpressure reduction vs helping gases to escape quickly as possible). Save for a few dedicated aftermarket guys, can't imagine that there's a ton of back pressure/flow optimization/sound enhancement/drone reduction R&D going on with a lot of these systems. Quote:

Hmmm. And maybe test pipes or xpipes are not out if question if you and HFCs or more resonators?
Hmmm. Finally someone speaks of the interior sound quality! |
