Powder Coating?
Maybe I'm really bad at searching but I could not find a thread that would answer my question, so here's my situation
I'm trying to get my rims with curb rash fixed and powder coated. I've contacted several shops and they all want me to drop off the rims at the shop but take the car with me. Are they implying that I should get an extra set of rims just to get my original set painted? Members who have powder coating experience, how did you handle the situation? |

When my buddy had his OZs repaired he had to put on his winter set to drive around on. It was a few years ago, but I could have sworn I saw on their website they did wheel "rentals" if you didn't have another set.
Maybe it's a small garage and they don't have the space to have a bunch of cars sitting on lifts? Just a theory. |

You'll always likely have to take the wheels off, take the tires off, and leave the rims with the shop. Sometimes a shop might take the tires off for you, but probably not.
Most places I've contacted are all the same (take everything off and leave the rims only). If this is your only car, then obviously you're in a jam. I have a truck, so I can put my M3 up and take the wheels off. I just don't have the time or money to do it right now.

I looked into getting this done several years ago (but didn't end up doing it) and I found at least one shop who would pick up the wheels but I was still responsible for getting both wheels and tires off my car. I suspect I could have found someone to come to my house to remove wheels and take off the tires.
I would think if you keep calling around you could find a shop who will just let you drop off your car and they'll just handle everything from there. It may cost a bit more but seems like it is worth this to avoid the hassle. |

^that's what I did last summer and I'm very happy with the results. I know there are a lot of plastidip detractors out there, but for $25 and 2 hours it's hard to beat. I think it looks perfectly fine.

Put the car on jack-stands in your garage and use another car (borrowed or rented) to deliver the wheels to the powdercoater. Even if they would allow you to leave the car at their shop, would you want to? Chances are it would sit outside while they did the work on the wheels. I'm not sure we need a thread for this; isn't this common sense / logistics? I know I'm sounding harsh but take some time to think it through...

Thanks for the helpful replies everyone.
I guess I'll have to contact a few more shops to see if they'll let me leave my car at the shop or lend me a set of rims. |
