New look for 2018

I've owned her for 5 years now and I think it was time to refresh the look a little this summer. I powdercoated my TE-37 Tokyo Time Attacks to a straight gunmetal color. I felt the black face with polished lip was looking a little bit too 2005-ish most of the time. The finish on the front rims were also partially ruined by some super aggressive Hawk track performance brake pads which left some corrosive brake dust on the rims that would not come off.

a bunch of interior carbon bits went in...

Since these dash pieces were coming out I had an AutoSolutions.net Short Shift Kit (SSK) installed at the same time.

Stock shift lever vs new.

Next I decided to do a GTS front lip with GT4 style canards but the OEM BMW front diffusers sem to be stuck on there with Betalink which is nearly impossible to take off so I bought a new bumper. It's an ECSTuning replica euro bumper because Phil (my body shop guy) said they fit pretty much like OEM and are a little bit cheaper. I'll store the original Lime Rock bumper away for safe keeping in case I need to go back to stock.

I had him paint the intake sections gloss black because I think it makes the stock bumper look more aggressive.

Phil mounting the finished bumper.. The ECS Euro does bumper seems to fit just like OEM. Bolts on easy and the lines and gaps post install are perfect!

Then, the AM Motorsports GTS style carbon fiber front lip was mounted using the stock bolts and 3 additional rivets.

Fitment is good on the lip.. some small gaps but nothing major. The quality of the lip is acceptable for $250. We had to use a black sharpie later to fill in some edges that were scratched or imperfect. No lip has lasted me longer that 2-3 years on our shitty streets and decaying city infrastructure so like I said for $250 the lip is worth it.

PSDesigns GT4 style carbon fiber dive planes/cannards. Held on by the double sticky tape and 2 rivets on each dive plane. Quality and fitment on these are very good, no complaints.

Looks fantastic! Nice touch with the painted black inlet with that lip combination, always good to see people try small, unique things in their quest of personalization.

And a 6MT LRP M3... That's a keeper!

What are your thoughts after installing the SSK?

I've been thinking about installing the Dinan SSK for the 335i, after another member confirmed it's compatibility on the M3.

Well, I have never tried the Dinan SSK but after doing a lot of research on this forum, it seems that the AutoSolutions.net SSK is the consensus best kit. You have to call "Ronald" and tell him your requirements and he custom builds it for you. I chose 15% shift reduction and stock height (because I didn't want to buy another shift boot). I got mine in about 2 weeks. The shifter came with a new beefy selector rod and a couple of new OEM BMW bushings.

The install took about 3-4 hours.. the most difficult part we struggled with was installing the 6 tiny screws holding the new shift lever to the shift bracket. It is in the absolute worst location for an allen wrench! We were able to do it without dropping the exhaust as per some of the excellent instructions on this site.

My biggest complaints on the stock 6MT in this car are: too much play in the shift knob, notchiness in 2nd and 3rd gear and vague feel. After the install the shift action has slightly more resistance (not as light as stock), ZERO play on the shift knob the gear slots are very exact. It feels more "mechanical" going into gear where it was vague before. Like a "raw" feeling going into gear.. It did not address the occassional notchiness going into 2nd and 3rd gear however but it pretty much addresses everything else. The 15% shift reduction I chose was not very aggressive, you may want to chose 30% or more if you want it to truly feel shortened up.

a good complementary mod would be the UC clutch pedal.. I did that as well and the clutch release point is low now where it should be and easier to drive smoothly. Also don't reinstall the clutch pedal spring when you are doing this.

good luck!

Thanks for the insight!

I've been working on improving the connected feel of this car since I got it. To me, the shifter and clutch feel not match the rest of the car.

I did get the M5 knob, UCP (stiffest setting), and have changed to Redline MTL, which both have helped tremendously.

I'm still debating if it is worth trying an SSK with the M3...

Lookin good man, good job! I'm using the same GT4 canards and they perform well on the track as good as they look!

Only one minor critique because my OCD is killin me. See in the pic below how the canard hangs over past the line of the front lip...that's the only thing I'm not a fan of. Probably because these canards are made for use with the GT4 lip which extends out pretty far. I guess this can easily be remedied with an addition of a splitter to the front lip that reaches out a little further. Other than that, I think your car looks great.
