6MT clutch depression discussion
All my 6MT people. I want some thoughts.
Besides depressing the clutch all the way down in 1st, in other gears how many of you are depressing the clutch all they way compared to depressing just up to the engagement point? I find that depressing the clutch just up to the engagement point my shifts are smoother. My previous car never caused any problems doing this. |

Look up clutch stop. Best $5 i have ever spent, and best mod on the car.

I depress the clutch the same amount for each shift regardless of gear - right to the floor. Haven't really thought much about this issue but I think if you didn't do this it probably won't have any negative impact on the clutch and of course your shifts will be a bit more efficient. You would need to get through the engagement section though, not just barely to it or I imagine you will likely start increasing wear. I think the last post had it right - getting a clutch stop is the best way to do this.

I got an ultimate clutch pedal. It is moderately more pricey than a $5 clutch stop. I wonder if I should have done that. But I do find that the UCP gives me quicker crisper shifts than previously, and that "gooey" feel that occurs before clutch engagement is all but gone.

I don't think its a matter of how far you depress the clutch for smoother shifting but rather the point which you begin to give apply fuel as the clutch disengages

I actually have my seat position set so that my leg extension stops at engagement point . it definitely shift smooth by not going all the way down.

Sometimes I notice a slight grind if I don't fully depress the clutch, especially 3-2 downshifts. So, I try my best to depress it all the way.

Clutch stop + remove the helper spring. Will feel very close to what the ultimate clutch pedal feels like from what I've read.
BMW tech actually asked me if I had upgraded my clutch because it was so much stiffer and better feeling |

Most definitely worth it! It allows for quicker footwork, and has a tighter, more solid feel. Switch the gooseneck shifter out for a zcp knob or a OEM 6mt knob and boot set(pricey) from the 2009+ e60 m5(lights up) and the whole shift setup will feel quite a bit nicer. I would recommend this to any e9x m3 6mt owner. I added the zcp knob and had a custom boot added. It only cost me about $160 for the new knob +boot. The knob/boot 1 piece thing from the e60 m5 is around $260 from bmw. It looks really cool though and lights up!

I'm tellin ya guys... try this if you're hesitant about the cost. Might as well if you're planning on removing the pedal altogether..

wouldn' the clutch stop damage the clutch if it's not fully engaging/disengaging?
some people say once engine starts okay with the clutch stop installed, it should be fine...but i'm just wondering...got no good knowledge in this if it has no mechanical damage i would like to give it a try
