Alignment to improve steering feel and turn in after a tire mistake?
Mine’s a 2011 non-edc E92. I used to have Michelin PS4S earlier and was satisfied with the turn-in. It was a bit snappy at times, especially under braking or when I lifted off throttle but I was totally fine with that. (I do like a bit of oversteer). My mechanic convinced me to try Continental Extremecontact DWS06 all-seasons and turns out it’s been a bad mistake. I am not sure if the alignment changed when the tires were changed and not sure what alignment I have now. The turn-in isn’t sharp anymore. The steering isn’t as quick and seems a bit reluctant to return on-center. It’s become very mushy at the front and I notice a lot of understeer, especially on the outside fronts. There’s a lot of push and the front tires have been giving away sooner than the rears (yuck). I am usually tidy on corner entries and I had never experienced this kind of understeer before. It’s harder to control, induce oversteer and predict when the rears step out, even with lesser grip at the rears. The softer, squishier tires have certainly ruined my M3 experience. It’s also very squirmy at the front and I notice a bit more roll. I’ve never been happy with the steering feel of my car, a bit numb on-center and can only feel when the front’s are loaded, or when I catch ruts on a rough road. Anyway, it’s now time to change the struts as they’ve worn out and make a horribly clunky rattle when the wheel’s rotated. As I use my car mostly as a DD/Canyon carver with a track day or two per year, I went ahead and bought a set of BC racing BR coilovers that come with camber plates. My objective is to improve the steering feel, accuracy, sharpness and make it a bit quicker for better turn-in, while reducing understeer. I do not mind if the tires wear out faster (it’s better even, as I can go back to PS4S again). I am planning to go with -2.5 F camber, 0 or 1/16 toe-out F and 1/16 toe-in R. Would these alignment settings help me achieve my objective and compensate a bit for the bad tires? Keeping in mind that negative camber introduces toe-out (please correct me if I’m wrong) is 0 or neutral toe the better option? Looking for recommendations. I will be dropping the fronts a bit, maybe an inch. Also, is caster adjustable with the BC-BR coilovers? If not what camber/caster plates can be used with them? I would like to increase the negative caster to try and see if it improves steering feel. I also do not mind if changing any of these settings make the car’s ride a bit harsher and if the steering is lot more livelier. I am used to unassisted steering racks and I understand my M3 unfortunately cannot live up to that. I am perfectly happy with the steering weight though, even in normal mode and I use the sport mode for steering and it loads up better. Unfortunately there’s not anymore feel to be had there. So, underdrive pulleys for heavier steering isn’t an option. I would also prefer to avoid upgrading sway bars right now.
Also, I run 219M 18’s with 245/40R18 F and 265/40R18 R. Balancing was done when tires were changed. I also run stock PSIs. Thanks in advance. Last edited by mysor3; 04-30-2021 at 01:14 AM.. |

you went from extreme summer performance tires to all seasons. Thats the issue. No alignment, coilovers or anything you mentioned can fix underperforming tires.

What is the point of the all season tires? Is it for winter driving or bad roads? Those are not performance tires.
Your best bet is to get new tires, it will give you back what you lost. Nothing to do with alignment or suspension.

For this car you have to drive summer tires, if you live in snowy areas and bad weather for those times you can buy another set of wheels and install winter tires.
Those of all seasons are not valid for this vehicle
