You make an excellent point. Years ago I was speaking with a rep from Ruf and he told me that when speed was the goal, they used thinner tires because of less rolling resistance. The wider tires improved handling, but not speed.

Norrower tyres also produce less wind resistance

Contact patch area size is a result of tire pressure/sidewall stiffness and car weight. Wider or narrower tire has no effect on the size just shape of the contact patch. Generally wider tires will have a wide contact patch that will aid cornering and hurt braking and acceleration.
