Not sure, but it almost looks like a pitot tube, that are on aircrafts (measures speed of airflow).

The outside air temperature sensor is located in the brake duct of my E36 M3, I would imagine the E9X has the same setup.

but I'm pretty sure it's just a thermometer? but the faster you go, the colder temps it would measure? ...just doesnt make sense for placement of that thing inside air intake, unless it does measure the speed of airflow?

Pretty sure that's the thermometer. Also, keep in mind that moving air doesn't measure at a cooler temperature by thermometers. It does feel cooler to the touch because of the increased evaporation that happens.

+1 on thermometer (pitot tubes have a little open-ended tube facing the oncoming airflow)

It's a temperature sensor. Cost around 45 bucks if you break it.
When you check the outside temp from inside the car I believe it gets the reading from that sensor.

You know that cold air flowing over a thermometer won't make it read colder than the ambient air temperature, right? It might make your hand feel colder if you drove with your hand out the window, but that is windchill. |

Actually I didn't break mine. My car still under 300 miles. LOL.
However, a friend with a 328 had one damaged. On the 328 if I recall it's on the bottom.
