Thanks called several dealers and was quoted about 1600... parts and labor... labor is intense and it is not worth doing it yourself.

That is an extremely cheap quote. I was quoted $3500 last year. I have had to recharge mine twice. I tried to recharge it once but failed. Local shop does it by weight not pressure. I might have a very slow leak, each recharge has been about a year apart. Two more recharges and I'll be looking for a different car anyhow.

Having mine changed as we speak @ 30422 Miles. The Indy shop said I should replace the heater/drier and expansion valve, but since they weren't broken, My warranty won't cover it. So I'm just having the Evap changed, we'll see if it lasts.

I had a recharge (with dye) and new schrader valves earlier this month, at dealer. $274. Car is an 08 with 35K miles. "come back and let us know if this doesn't work, we won't charge you again for the freon".
I will be pretty disappointed if the evaporator needs to be replaced. My 2001 M coupe works perfectly and always has. Ridiculous a part like that would fail.

Shit you might as well strip your car and make a track car given how close they are now.
Looks like a big job to have to dismantle the whole dash, etc....

I know it was under warranty, but did they give you a cost? I don't use my AC much, even if it's 100 degrees.
Sweat running down my face, ears ringing from exhaust. Such is life "D

My evaporator just went out at around 33,000 miles. Luckily my USAA extended warranty has me fully covered. The dealer said the cost was $2,700 (assume before any taxes or fees). Now my $1,900 extended warranty is looking like a pretty wise decision and I still have over 3 years and almost 30,000 miles left on it. They said I'll have the car back by tomorrow night which doesn't seem to bad considering the pictures above.

Yes mine crapped out at 25k miles. The car is a 2011.5, covered by bmw but i had to take it back 4 times for them to fix a rattle they left behind the dashboard.

Just got back from the dealership getting my inspection done & while I was there inquired on why my ac wasn't blowing as cold anymore. And was told my evaporator was leaking, I have a 09 with 25,028 miles on her so I was kind of surprised by this news. The cost to replace including shop fees & tax is $2,709.80. I'm so glad I bought an extended warranty(cost me $3,800) which has paid for itself for I just had my oil pan replaced back in May & that was over 2k which the warranty covered, all I had to pay was my deductible which is $100 bucks.... So I scheduled to take her to the shop August 5 my SA said it'll take about a week to get the work done for they have to remove the whole dash! I'm gonna to miss my baby

I think my evaporator is going at 77k miles. Got a question for the expert here. It looks like BMW uses 2 evaporator, one from Denso and one from Valeo. Does any one know if they are interchangeable? I looked up on RealOEM and it seems that every other components (compressor, condenser, lines, fittings, expansion valve) are all just 1. Wouldn't this imply that the 2 evaporators are interchangeable as it's only fitted to the expansion valve? The reason I ask is that it looks like only the Valeo ones are leaking and no one seem to have reported leak with the Denso unit. The Denso is more expensive but I would rather use it instead of redoing a Valeo one later. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
edit: nevermind, the housing part is different. Will see if it's worthwhile to just change this too. Thanks. |

Yup, I just went in for a scheduled vehicle check and they're replacing my valve gaskets and AC evaporator as we speak. The M3 has about 29k miles on it, but I do live in TX and the AC is definitely cranked everyday since May. Luckily, I still have a couple months left on the original warranty (starting to shop for an extended as we speak). Is there anything that I should look out for once I get the car back (rattles, noises, etc)? Knowing that they take the whole dash off makes me fear of the inevitable rattles that probably come with it...
