disadvantages of removing cold start from a tune?

Are there any disadvantages to removing cold start from a tune?

The things that come to mind as possibilities are reduced cat life, and longer warmup times.

I'm planning to go supercharged soon, and in the process will likely having cold start deleted. I'm not planning on running test pipes or removing the cats, so I want to ensure I am not going to negatively affect cat life by doing this, or increase engine wear by making it take longer to warm up.

Thanks.

I am not a doctor, but I don't think cold start cycle does anything at all to warm the car faster, that's more a high idle thing, and I would think reduced life of cats just from shoving 20-30% more exhaust flow through them at WOT, and possibly at a richer mixture/richer idle due to the bigger injectors, is a much bigger factor than whether or not they light off 20-30 seconds quicker thanks to the cold start still being there

Like Richbot said, it only is used to bring the cats to operating temperature faster. I've been running a cold start delete for several years with no issues. I am running Akra Evo exhaust so it has high flow cats anyways. My oldest appreciates it since before the cold start delete the exhaust note would vibrate her bedroom floor as she's right over the garage.

Funny you mention that- this is the exact scenario I am trying to fix. Makes it kinda hard to slip out at night when cold start shakes the damn house. Have a 3 year old, and would like to be able to sneak out for a late night cruise without waking her.

Totally get that increase in fuel from the supercharger will affect cat life. Just wanted to make sure that the cats taking longer to come up to temp wouldn't cause any unintended side effects.

Yup, the $500 for the Alpine tune to delete cold start was 100% worth my wife not complaining about it. When I first got the car cold start + the Eisenmann Race would shake the whole damn house inside the garage.

Back with the stock exhaust and no cold start I left the other day at 5AM and asked if I woke her up and she said nope, so I'm golden.

Cold start delete is 100% worth every dime.

The cold start cycles are so damn annoying. Especially when you turn off an already hot car, just for it to cycle again when you start it up 30 seconds later.

I've been running it for over a year now with zero issues.

That has always perplexed me. Why in the world does cold start kick in if the car is already hot? It almost seems like cold start runs longer if its already hot too. Makes no sense.

I tried both maps with and without cold start, and I noticed that with HFCs the car smelled a lot less when I ran the cold start procedure. :

It's purely an emissions thing to warm up the primary CATs as mentioned.
Part of this cold start cycle is the air pump which also helps the CAT's performance.

The question I haven't talked to a tuner abut yet is, does the cold start delete also remove the air pump error code if it is removed.

This. This exact statement. My wife said "Oh, you fixed your car!". I maintained that nothing was wrong with it so nothing was fixed. I left for Cars and Coffee last Sunday and she commented when I got back that her AND my daughter slept right through me leaving! Win.

Having just installed the Alpine tune with CSD, part of me misses the insane racket or startup

I consider the CSS as a huge bonus with the installed Corsa exhaust. Gets the adrenaline going when I start the car which is what it's all about.

Hated cold start with already obnoxious exhaust system, so had deleted with no cats. this time opted to keep it with more civilized system with HFC.. I do like it, it's a bit dramatic but there's something very satisfying when you can hear the air valve closing and it gets all quiet and smooth and the idle seems to slow a bit and the oil pressure starts coming down.

I'm running a Dinan mid pipe(4resonators no cats) with an ACM modded OE muffler and the cold start sounds fANTASTIC!

BUT is loud enough it shakes out house AND the neighbors! And on the freeway it is loud enough you have to talk loudly with passengers and/or crank the stereo.

I've got to make a change...

Thinking I'm going to go CSD and then a muffler swap to balance things out.

That said, I am apprehensive that it will take the excitement out of the wonderful S65 experience.

You can get the excitement when you drive the car.

Cold start is annoying and I usually kept my valves closed before I deleted it. With the valves open, it's louder than a straight piped C7 corvette
