I almost bought a 2011 GT but after owning 2 E46 M3s and a 07 997S the rest of the Mustang, while light years better than the 05-09 Mustang, just wasn't up to snuff vs. a E9X M3.

The 5.0 is marginally faster in a straight line, and I've taken many of them on road courses... HP isn't everything.

Lets just say I disagree with the "marginally" faster...the 5.0 is quicker by over .5 sec in 0-60 and 1/4 mile and not to mention up to 8mph faster in the 1320. The 4.6L gets its ass handed to it by the 5.0L. Post up your response over on some Mustang sites and be ready with a flame suit on.

I realize there are plenty of fan boys out there that only see displacement and HP numbers. And the 5.0 is NOT .5 sec faster 0-60 than a Track Pack, 3.73 equipped 2010, which is what my comparison is to... It'd be lucky to push .3 better, more likely .2 faster, and that's in optimal conditions.

i just sold our last 2010 mustang and we had to sell it under cost to move it bc everyone wants the new engine. having driven both the 2010 and the 2011 i really like the new coyote engine much better. it could be bc i love my M3 and i like the higher redline and the added tq down low. the 2010 is not bad at all but i think the new 5.0 is hands down a better engine.

now of course a good driver could beat someone in a 5.0 with a 4.6 around a track but that could be said for any car. i have seen guys in mazda miata's spank guys around the track with 200k cars

Believe me, I am well aware of Mustangs. The 5.0L Mustang is much faster than .3 sec. in the 1/4 mile. What are you taking the best times ever recorded for the 4.6 and the worse times for the 5.0L? There are people who have run 12.50's in bone stock 5.0L Mustangs, I haven't seen any OEM 4.6L track pack or not Mustang break in much under 13.5 sec.

I am not a fanbois, I own a E92 M3..I have no dog in this hunt. This is just the facts. You have a car with 412hp vs. 315..how do you figure.

Car and Driver with a TrackPack car ran a 13.7 @104mph..

Car and Driver ran a 13.0@111mph in a 2011 GT Brembo car..do the math.

Forget about real world times which have some guys already deep in the 11s with just D/Rs a tune, and O/R pipe.

Im not a 5.0 fan boy or an american car fan boy. I traded my 2010 mustang gt in for a 2011 mustang gt with the Brembo option and the 2011 is absolutely the better car. I drove the 2010 at Little Tally three times and Road Atlanta 2 times as well as several trips to the 1/4 mile. I've also had my 2011 on the same tracks and it is definitely faster. I hope to have an 08 m3 soon so I can compare it at the same tracks. The 2010 was a great car and I do miss it since parts were way cheaper.

I just read the two articles in 5.0 Mustang about the development of the Coyote and Roadrunner V8's and am impressed at the performance they got out of these engines given the price point of the vehicles they will be in. The only thing I found funny in the article was the fact that the lead engineer on the project stated that the ECM they use is not able to control the engine at over 7500RPM. With a more powerful ECM and the higher redline it would allow, this engine has the ability to make even more power. The engineering in the new 5.0 really impressed me to say the least. It is nice to see the american car makers step up and build something high tech and interesting for a change.

I've got a 2012 5.0 Convertible (Girlfriend had to have a convertible) rented for my summer vacation in Nova Scotia. I will post my thought's on it once I have driven it!

I'm sure my brother loves his car, but I haven't got a chance to even feel out what type of car it is. Sheesh, I haven't sat in it once after the test drive (he bought it that day, and yes I haven't sat in it since - we are in good terms, no worries)

Once again, I'm sorry I can't give my opinons on my little brothers car... He's just a very busy student with a full-time job, and I'm proud of him.

EDIT: I'm pretty set on learning how to drive MT, and taking up my brother's promise on letting me drive the 5.0. I'm a bimmer fanatic, and I am really not going to consider getting a mustang now that we have one in the garage. I think my father's 135i needs some ///M company!

If you guys are interested, I will be posting here with pictures of my brother's car (if he allows me to). I really want to share how beautiful the black Mustang is with you guys!

Just drove my brother's HR 350Z (lease was over, but his best friend ended up buying it out a few months later), and that car is very quick (6MT). I'll be driving the 5.0 next, and soon to go for a test drive for an M3 (probably DCT to play it safe. Just ecstatic to drive a V8 for the first time. Sheesh, I'm starting to think these cars have too much power & I need experience driving a four banger or somethingggggggggg not so costly!

btw im not so sure about the m3, had a job for a month so far

and looking to lease a new 335i this year

just to question myself, if im getting a new 335i - shouldn't i consider a CPO m3?

I have been driving a 2012 Mustang 5.0 GT Convertible that I rented on the 25th of August and will be driving it till the 9th of September when my holidays are over.

Here is what I think of the car:

I am not a fan of the styling inside or out but the car does feel like it is fairly well put together despite the fact that some of the materials they use on the inside of it are not up to snuff in my book(My 2001 VW GTI or my GF's 08 Civic Si used nicer quality materials and had much better fit and finish on the interior). Also considering that the Mustang is a relatively large car, it doesn't have very much space inside for a big guy like me and the back seats are pretty much useless for adults.

The Engine is excellent!!! It has great low end torque yet still pulls strongly to redline. I am a big fan of this new engine and I think Ford has done a good job on the development of this engine and they have a winner here!!! If I could ask for one thing with this powerplant it would be a higher redline...... if would be great to be able to spin this thing to 8K or so...... it sure feels like it has the lungs to turn much faster.

The Chassis feels very good (even in the convertible), it is well damped, rides well and is not what I was expecting. Steering feel and communication from the tire contact patches to the driver however, is nowhere near as good as in the M3.

The long and short of this review is that although I still am not interested in buying a Mustang because I am not too fond of the interior or exterior styling...... but...... I think it is an amazing bang for the buck where performance is concerned. It has a very good chassis, and amazing engine, and is a good car for the money.

If Ford was willing to use this engine/chassis combination for a sporty sedan/coupe that was a little more understated/elegant as far as styling was concerned I might be interested (My Fiance loves the Mustang so I may end up having one of these in my garage eventually anyhow)

Congrats to all you 5.0 owners you have a kick ass ride, but it is still not a true M3 competitor in my book!!!

Nice write up, I'm glad you enjoyed the Mustang. I wish I could afford an M3, but then again I am aiming to lease a brand new 335i... I guess I could consider a CPO M3 (but gas + insurance might be a deal breaker). How was the transmission? My buddy said there was a recall on the "chinese" transmission. Were you riding in an automatic 5.0? If not, how was the 6spd?

I just wish they would take the mustang performance and put it in a different car, a sports car, a new age probe, something cool looking, not classic.

Oh, so Ford replaced the MT-82 transmission with a completely different unit? I'll tell my cousin next time he's in town that Ford fixed all the mt-82's. It's not like he's still having problems on his second unit.

Ford claimed only 3% were effected... and their fix was

I did a similar comparo...new 5.0 GT vs used e92. However, uncertainty was over after 3 minutes in the M3. Yes, the new 5.0 is a great AMERICAN muscle car, but the M3 is a great car the world over. M3Fool has it right: go with the Mustang if you love Fords, go with the M3 if you love great automobiles.

My friend has a 5.0 with catless O/R xpipes - LT headers - CI intake - SCT Hight oct. Tune - Borla stingers - and plenty of carbon fiber parts. He also has the Aluminator engine.

My other friend has the E93 M3 and I can say his M3 tears past the 5.0, even though both are highly modded.

I personally own a Valencia orange 1 series M coupe which has no mods (as will it remain) and the 5.0 kicks my ass haha.

Well the NTSB ended their investigation finding no problem that hasn't been addressed by Ford, I understand that there are people still unhappy and Ford blames it on abuse. You know as well as I there are people on both sides of the fence on this. No reason to throw on gasoline on to a simmering flame...
