Thermostat gone.Replace waterpump at 77000 miles?

Hi all,
Thermostat needs replacing...
2B59 code and long warmup.
Would you also replace the waterpump or wait until closer to 100k?
Car is e92 m3 2009.
Thanks

Thermostat is easier to replace than the water pump. I have changed the thermostat but not the water pump on my 08 with 101k miles. The water pump is on the list for preventative maintenance but they don’t seem to be common failure items at lower mileage. I’d guess 100-150k miles.

At 77k I'd only replace the thermostat. I'm at 103k and my thermostat is on it's way out. I'll do the water pump too but only because I'm at 100k

I would and did replace the water pump when the thermostat went out. With our water pump having a plastic rotating wheel to move the coolant, it is a wear item and will eventually fail. The thermostat is also directly inserted into the water pump and replaced easier with the water pump removed.

If I took the time to remove everything to get to the thermostat, why wouldn't I go ahead and put a new water pump on it?

Because it isn’t necessary?

Just replaced my thermostat and sensor this weekend and it is not easier to replace the thermostat when the water pump is removed.

The thermostat housing is mounted to the water pump so you obviously have to remove the t-stat housing FROM the pump, but unless you plan to change the pump, you leave it in place, do your work on the t-stat/sensor and reinstall.

The OEM water pump is $450+ so I do not think I'd replace it unless I was at
100k+ miles.

I’d buy the Geba pump for $175. Doesn’t Geba make it for BMW? If I was spending $450+ in a pump I would buy the Motorsport pump.

Good to know if true.. I would have investigated further if I chose to change the pump.

I don't believe they do. The GEBA pump has a metal impeller. The oem pump is composite.

Graf also makes a metal impeller pump for $90.

https://www.bimmerworld.com/Cooling/...M5-E63-M6.html

And Uro Parts sells a composite impeller pump for even less.

You can get the thermostat, hoses, antifreeze, and pump for under $400 at FCP. Did both, car runs better than ever. The GEBA pump appeared to be made better than the BMW unit I pulled. Either way, if it doesn't last I'll just use the lifetime warranty.

My thermostat went bad and I considered just swapping the thermostat but you are 80% there and already lost some coolant. I swapped in a new rein water pump ($83 at rock auto), upper and lower hose (rein $40) replaced all the seals and full coolant flush. The old thermostat took some force to pry out because the seals had disintegrated. Added less than 30 mins to the DIY.

I second this. I would get the kit from fcpeuro.

I purchased it too, about to have mine serviced in a few days, I'm at 125k and climbing.

Thanks.
I was thinking about buying the GEBA waterpump.
Still not sure that Im comfortable with installing it...
There seem to be some horror stories about GEBA.

From 10 years ago when it was tack welding sheet metal impellers or from more recent cast impellers? FCP euro offers a lifetime warranty so they do the research for you on what works reliably — they are eating the cost if it is junk so they try hard not to sell junk.

Any comments about the Mahle Behr thermostat?
27$ at fcpeuro is very cheap (even compared to this brand elsewhere)
Thanks

Garage List
I had both my Water pump and Thermostat replace and sourced my parts through FCP last month when I hit 75 k as a preventative measure. Figure will be keeping my car long term....next up will be using lifetime Warranty on both of my TA that I had gotten from FCP when one went out at 48 k and will probably exchange them out around 100 k just as a preventative and because we can with FCP.

Mahle Behr is the OE part on this car, it works great.

I just installed a GEBA pump on my 08 M3 with 120,800 miles on it at the time. The old pump was factory BMW and I recall it was made by HEPU. The GEBA pump I received looked identical to the one on FCP's website, and the impeller looked very solid. I intend to track my M3 in the near future and I feel very comfortable with the quality of the GEBA pump. I also changed my water pump pulley since it is made from plastic, I figured after 12 years it was a good idea to "preventatively" replace it along with the water pump.

To the OP, replace the waterpump as well since you are already draining a bit of coolant out of the system and that can be messy. Just buy the refresh kit from FCP. My $0.02..

Make sure to replace the coolant temperature sensor as well. Mine had a layer of grime adhered to it..

What did you guys notice when the thermostat was going bad?
I'm assuming high temps with the water pump failure?
.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

The exact opposite. Low temp since thermostat remains open.

I just replaced my thermostat, hoses, water pump and sensor. At 104k miles now, car showed a CEL and was taking longer to reach operating temps.

Water pump looked perfectly fine when I removed it
