Selling my wife...
...on making mods. I know at least a handful of you have gone through this. It starts with you approaching your wife, girlfriend or whoever with a basic story well organized in your head. The story might start with some basic figures, stats. and facts that seem sensible: "...well, I can shave a few pounds of un-sprung weight, gain a handful of HP, increase down-force enhance the look of the car and maybe even cure cancer ...all for just $X,XXX (fill in your own ridiculous figure)".
The story sounds great...to you. It's neatly packaged, contains facts/figures and has an emotional appeal, it all makes sense. At least it makes sense until you slip in the price tag, that's where things go sideways. Even in your uber-confident mood the price feels a little crazy, when you listen to your own words. So my questions is: -How do you sell the unsensible? Who has had success here and what did it take? -Lastly, for s#*ts and giggles, who has had a massive failure here (much to be learned from failure…and much to laugh at) |

Seems like you don't wear the pants in the relationship. If you're working and you can AFFORD the mods than why wouldn't you be able to go ahead and treat yourself to something that you deserve for all your hard work. My wife understands this and doesn't question me when I want to mod my car.

It's called the Chick Tax.. buy her a nice Prada bag and when you give it to her tell her you sorta bought an new exhaust for the car too.. She'll be so happy with the new bag that she can't complain about the exhaust.. Unfortunately your exhaust got a little bit more expensive but that's price you pay when you mod under a relationship

Never had that problem. She knew I always did a lot of research on any purchase so I never bought anything on impulse. I myself, have decided I'm done with modding though. I got it all out of my system on my last car. I bought the M with the intention of buying a car that was so good off the lot that I had no urge to mod. So far, I haven't got the urges.

Its not our business how your money is spent or how you two react in your relationship. Nor am I in much place to tell you how to do things, since Im assuming you are much older than I am. (Im 21) but if you can afford it and it will do little to nothing to you financially then do as you please. She should want you to enjoy yourself and your toy, and vice versa. Though it is only natural that if you buy an extremely large ticket item that she or you inquires. Like a 2k purse or some 10k wheels. But what is a large ticket item is proportional to your financial situation. So just use your best judgment, the worse that can happen is that she says no. But really its your cash so have at it.

This past Xmas I bought my wife a pricey necklace without her even hinting that she wanted it. She was bummed that she hadn't gotten me anything nearly as nice and said "babe you should go out and get something else for yourself..." I replied with "I was thinking about getting some track wheels/tires." She said, "Oh good!"
And they think THEY'RE playing mind games! |

You're a better man than me...the minute I bought it I was thinking about a new exhaust. It's been a year, probably about time....then I'm done

Two points:
1) She never buys anything that expensive so I can't "reverse sell it" to her. That's both good news and bad news. 2) You have a point, and it's not like I'm buying hookers...gave that up a while back. Quote:

First thing first, make sure she don't see this 'wife for sale..' post.
Secondly, tell her that your mod will help the environment (if she is a liberal) or tell her that it will help the economy (if she is a conservative). Third (if she still won't agree with you), tell her that it is cheaper and safer than having some bad vice like extra marital relationship or tobacco sex. That you deserved to be rewarded. |
