Luna—The 1-of-1 Moonstone Metallic and Extended Rust Brown 2011 E92 M3

Hi everyone and welcome to my journal for a new project I acquired!

My name is Alex and I’m beyond excited to share with you all a very special car that I’ve acquired for my collection — Its name: Luna.

Project Luna is a 2011 BMW E92 M3…but not your average E92 M3.

According to fellow M3 owner and the unofficial guru of BMW E9X M3 Individual Paint directory, David Rutherford, there were 160 BMW M3s made that featured the Individual paint code of Moonstone Metallic (Mondstein Metallic X04). Of those that came to North America, 13 were E92 M3s, and Project Luna is one of those. I chose the name Luna for the project, because of its latin origin (Luna meaning moon), and of course because it’s a beautiful sounding name.

What makes this project even more special is that it very well could be a 1-of-1…why you may ask?
Well Project Luna features one of the most beautiful interiors available to this platform — Rust Brown (Oxyd-Braun). To make things even better, it is optioned in Extended Leather, which really suits and balances the interior nicely.
The real icing on the cake is the Individual Piano Black with Inlay Interior Trim and Individual Audio that exquisitely completes the interior.

Preface to the Story

The E92 BMW M3 initially caught my eye and love for the car thanks to these two pictures:

Having seen those, I became a fan and wanted to own one in the future, specifically in Alpine White. My first car was actually a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta that I used to commute to University of Toronto (UofT).

It was a great car that I took excellent care of, but I loved sports cars, and had my eyes on one day owning an E92 M3. 10 years ago actually, my parents were planning to gift me one for graduating UofT’s business school on the Dean’s List! That dream changed the moment I heard a modified 2011 Subaru STi hatchback drive by (owned by a stranger named Carl, who later became one of my best friends).

While in 2nd year university, my parents ended up surprising me early with a brand new 2013 Subaru STi instead of waiting for the M3, given the price difference between the two cars…I was perfectly happy with that.

The love for the E9X platform never wavered. In 2015, I took this picture of 3 Alpine White E92 M3s at a local car meet hosted by Alpha Motorsports (no longer exists), and it definitely had me in my feels.

I knew one day I’d own an E92 again.

Fast forward to April 2018, I started a new career as an insurance broker, and wanted another car. I ended up purchasing a 2008 E90 M3 in Silverstone Metallic…not quite an E92, but close. This car, named Project Sky, has spent the last 4 years (since October 2019) in the shop getting converted into a race-inspired street car.

If you’d like to see more of that car, I have a separate journal for it that you can view here: Sky—The SS E90 M3 GTR: KMP, MKRennsporttechnik, Spage Sport, Varis, Volk, Vorsteiner

I still had every intention to own an E92 one day…it was just a matter of time.

It All Started With A Dream — The Story

Over the years of my M3 ownership, I wanted to get more involved with the local M3 community. In 2019, I joined a Toronto-based E9X M3 WhatsApp group chat and have built some great friendships, and continue to learn a ton about this platform.

Back in 2021, my friend Alex Carr (M3Post Member: "acarr6acarr6) posted in our group chat a picture of an E92 M3 he spotted in his neighbourhood while walking his dog.

The vehicle was no one’s in the group chat, but definitely got many people’s attention, including mine. This car was often parked in the driveway, and you could argue neglected.

I asked Alex to get more information on the car, should he ever see the owner.
It was discovered that this vehicle was a 1-owner, European delivery (ED), Moonstone Metallic on Extended Rust Brown Leather Interior with Individual Piano Black with Inlay Interior Trim and Individual Audio. Although at times left outside, it had never been winter driven, was “accident free” (more details on that will follow), and had all of 35,451 kms (equivalent to approx. 22k miles).

Alex eventually met the previous owner, and discovered that there was no interest in selling the vehicle. Funny enough, I parked that idea and knew that I’d one day own that car. I even put that energy out there in the universe that, “Mark my words, I will own that car one day.”

This colour as a matter of fact, I like more than Alpine White, as it is silver in nature, but under certain lighting has hints of gold, and shades of white and chalk grey…truly incredible when seen in person.

Before proceeding with the story, one important detail to note is the importance of being kind to others, and a good friend/person. I always try to lead by example, inspire others to work hard, and treat others the way I wish to be treated. Alex Carr is someone who has always had my back, supported my Youtube channel, motivated me to work hard in my career, and has kept his eyes out for me regarding finding rare parts for my E90 M3 (ex: Discontinued Vorsteiner E90 M3 Carbon Fiber Diffuser: Discontinued Vorsteiner E90 M3 Carbon Fiber Diffuser Post).

Well after 2 years of parking the idea of owning that 2011 Moonstone Metallic E92 M3, 1 message on Monday, October 02, 2023 at 4:23pm EST changed everything!

Alex posted in the WhatsApp group chat that his neighbour with the 2011 Moonstone M3’s car was for sale at a local exotic/fine-cars dealership!! Timing-wise, it was not ideal. Having said that, an opportunity to own this exact car that I wanted over 2 years ago would likely never come again, so I adopted the YOLO mentality and seized the opportunity.

I called the dealership, World Fine Cars, and spoke with one of their sales specialists, Tony. He mentioned that the car was listed for $53K CAD firm, and that they already turned down some offers at $51K. My excitement and emotional attachment to this car definitely overpowered my logic, and as a result, I had no intention to negotiate…I knew the car was mine the moment Alex texted me. I even briefly explained to Tony the story about how I manifested owning this exact car 2 years ago. He was really intrigued that we ended up in this moment together…truly incredible if you ask me.
I arranged to see the car in person a day later, and bought the car the moment I saw it…didn’t even test drive the car!

Having done “extensive research,” OK snooping, I knew the car was clean but suffered a small casualty. See a while ago, Alex was walking his dog and noticed that the owner (his neighbour) was selling his house! Funny enough, the car was pictured in the home’s for sale ad, and we thought it’d be funny to go to the open house and make an offer to buy the car (I never ended up doing that). When looking closely at the home’s for sale ad, I noticed some small damage to the passenger side lower portion of the front bumper. It’s very hard to see, but the owner must have hit a curb and took the paint right off.

This was not disclosed or reported, hence why it did not show up in the Carfax. I’ll give the benefit of the doubt to World Fine Cars that they did not know of this (perhaps the owner repaired it before he sold/traded it in to the dealership)…nonetheless, it doesn’t matter and is unnoticeable…kudos to the painter.

Tony and I settled everything and the deal was officially done…on October 12th, I was picking up my dream car!!
On pick-up day, I had to give Tony a proper handshake to close the deal and drive off in the sunset.

A very special thank-you to Tony and his colleague Joseph for providing me with a truly “white glove” treatment and turning my dream into a reality.

Below is a picture of my first fill-up with Project Luna.

I also took my mom, dad, and sister out for a spin in the car, and they absolutely loved it! Having the support of my family is one of the best feelings anyone can have. I’m grateful for all they do, the opportunities they have and continue to provide me with, and the love they show me, my family, and others.

Concluding Thoughts

To me, Project Luna is a beautiful story that emphasizes the importance of dreaming BIG, manifesting, being kind and care-driven towards others, and seizing opportunities. It’s surreal knowing that 10 years ago, I dreamed of owning an E92 M3. It’s surreal knowing that people like Alex always have my back and identify opportunities to make my dreams a reality. It’s surreal knowing that believing that the universe has your back thanks to the sheer power of the Law of Attraction, and that with the right mindset you can achieve anything!
I hope this story inspires you to work hard, be kind and generous to others, dream big, and be resilient and unshakeable in pursuing those dreams…after all, it all started with a dream.

Thank-you all for your continuous support with my Youtube Channel, my journal here on M3Post for Project Sky, and now Project Luna.
Side note: It’s interesting seeing both names together, Sky and Luna, as they are similar in nature (sky and moon).

I hope you enjoy this beautiful journey of the most prized possession in my car collection. This journal will be heavily documented and the car will be cherished, preserved, appreciated, and most importantly, enjoyed.

Really appreciate you, jra85! The story is my favourite part, given all the meaning, support and motivation behind it. Happy to have your support on this journey with Project Luna.

Thank-you so much Wyatt wyatth!! Always appreciate your support. Some of my writing influence on my journals for Luna and Sky are because of you...as you know, I'm a huge fan of your journal, especially the photo capturing, writing, and storytelling.

Haha oh rest assured swagon that will not happen. I see it as I have one overly modified car, and now one masterpiece in full OEM form...it will be preserved as such...although, stay tuned for a future update where we do a "modification/enhancement" to the car to preserve it's originality.

UPDATE #2: Regular “Doctor” Visits Are A MUST!

Hey everyone and welcome back to my journal!

We're starting the journey off with an important first maintenance day for Project Luna! So off to the doctor she goes.

This update takes place in October 2023.

Not Your Typical “PPI”

PPI typically stands for “Pre-Purchase Inspection.” Given the background from my first post, you’ll recall that I did not perform a PPI, and bought the car on the spot (not even a test-drive)!

Well my PPI looks a bit different; see we’re doing a Post-Purchase Inspection Let’s hope everything checks out.

I took the car to see my mechanic Usic, owner of Total Motor Werkes. His shop restores classic BMW and Mercedes, and is also the 2nd home for Project Sky, my 2008 E90 M3 racecar.

The game-plan for this service day was to change the oil (incl. sending an oil sample to Blackstone Laboratories), as well as inspect the under-carriage of the vehicle.

The car has just over 36,000 kms (equivalent to approx. 22,000 miles), and has never been winter driven. One would imagine such a car to be immaculate underneath; thankfully that assumption was correct! The undercarriage looks incredible!!

The Sun Brings Out The Gold

After Usic performed the first servicing job, we brought the car outside for some pictures. The sun was shining bright, and my oh my is Moonstone a special colour! The gold flake shimmers strong; what an incredible colour to witness in person! I absolutely love this car and will always do my best to preserve its beauty!!

Green Light from Blackstone

A month and a half later, I heard back from Usic that the Blackstone report checked out flawlessly…a good initial sign to start with. It was brought to my attention from my friend Alex Carr (M3Post Member: "acarr6acarr6), that while a great initial indicator, the true indication of a healthy motor is through continued oil analysis reports. We will therefore continue performing such oil analyses through Blackstone Laboratories.

Concluding Thoughts

Really appreciate you all for checking in on my latest post. The next update is a game-changer, and will be broken down into several posts! I’ll just say this: Acquiring my dream car is a big deal for me — a novelty that will stay lit. I will ensure that the car is always looking as perfect as possible.

UPDATE #3: Bringing In The Right People For The Job

Hey everyone and welcome back to my journal!

I’m super stoked to share with you all this lengthy update, where we ensure Project Luna stays as close to perfect as possible. In order to do that, we need to rely on the specialists for the required work to be performed.

This update takes place in October and November 2023.

A Lasting Impression

I’m a pretty positive and optimistic person. In my personal life, there’s a few sayings I frequently say:
The dream is free, the hustle is sold separately.
Have an impactful day!

Such sayings leave my family, friends and following always feeling motivated, positive and ready to attack their day.

Keeping that in mind, I wanted to get a custom license plate for Project Luna. I wanted something cool, unique, and very much me. After toying with a few different options, it hit me… “MPACTFUL”!!!!!
What a great idea, that speaks to me and one of my favourite sayings…plus an added bonus is it’s an M-car, so almost a double-entendre.

Now, I wanted to incorporate my saying into the license plate so I came up with this idea for the license plate frame…let me know what you think:

Well thanks to my good friend Steven@Elevated Auto, he made this idea come to life!

It makes me so happy to have this license plate and frame. I know it will put a smile on people’s faces every time they see my car!

Did Someone Say “Spa Day”?

While having around 36,000 kms or 22,000ish miles, one could assume Project Luna is immaculate. That person making the assumption would be partially right, however upon closer inspection, there were several areas of concern that needed to be addressed.

The trunk has a large dent in it that went unnoticed from when I bought the car. Upon looking at the neighbourhood shots of the car from the original owner, you can clearly see the dent.

Here are some pictures of it:

In addition to that, because the car was often times left outside by the prior owner, there was some hail damage in various spots of the car, as seen below:

I first contacted my dent specialist friend Deron@Magic Dent Repair Ltd., who has done dent repairs on my other vehicles. Unfortunately, Deron was unavailable for a few months because he was working on a special project for repairing an entire dealership’s fleet of vehicles that suffered hail damage.

I was then referred by Alex (M3Post Member: "acarr6acarr6) to Marty Corallo@Autodent Paintless Dent Repair, who is another recognized Paintless Dent Removal (PDR) specialist in Toronto. Marty sent one of his employees to perform the job and it turned out as great as possible.

Steven managed to snap a couple pics behind the scenes:

Thank-you again Marty@Autodent Paintless Dent Repair for your team’s work on Project Luna.

INCOMING!!!!! OCD+ Package for Perfection

Steven@Elevated Auto and I have been friends for over 10 years now, and he has worked on all my family’s vehicles. In addition, he is my go-to referral for window tinting, paint protection film (PPF), and in-car electronics (ICE) upgrades.

Before Steven created his current shop, Elevated Auto, he first started working at a recognized Toronto shop called Auto-Links, and was the head tint and PPF specialist. He worked on my brand new 2013 Subaru STi, Project Gabby, and performed on it an entire front-end PPF job. Over time, we started doing a lot of extra PPF work throughout the car (ex: door jambs, A-pillars, B-pillars, front grille, etc.) and Steven coined the term, “The OCD package” for my car.
Well funny enough, we eventually PPF’d the entire car and then recoined the term to be, “The OCD+ package.

Because Project Luna is such a special and rare car, I wanted to give it the same amount of love and attention that Project Gabby got…so off to Elevated Auto we went.

Since the car had spent some of its life sitting outside, it had extremely minimal swirls…recall this photo:

If you look closely in the photo, you can see the minimal swirling on the paint. I still wanted perfection, so I decided to reach out to my friend Wes@Orion Detailing. Wes and Steven are friends, and both I’m glad are part of this project. Funny enough actually, the reason I chose Wes to work on the car was because over 10 years ago, I started my sole proprietor detailing business out of my home garage and was doing everything wrong (ex: 1 bucket wash without grit guard, wearing sharp object clothes like jeans with a belt and a watch, using the coin-op brush of doom all over the paint)…yes, it was bad.

I wasn’t getting the results I had always seen at car shows and strived for, so I started doing my research online, specifically on the detailing forums. I stumbled across a few threads on the website "DetailingBliss.com” and found a Toronto-local detailer with some very impressive threads on vehicles he’s worked on out of his home garage. From cars like an LSB E46 M3, to even a Ferrari Testarossa. The thread of his that first inspired me was the Audi R8 detail job he performed.

I started learning all about brushes, two bucket method (this was also before grit-guards were a thing), paint-depth gauges, how to mask the car’s trim with tape, solar gun to see swirls, etc.. Keep in mind, we’re in 2011 and this guy had all the latest gadgets and gismos, and best practices down to a tee!

Here are some photos circa 2010 of Wes in action:

I’ve also included the detailing threads of those aforementioned cars he detailed for your reference to check out…it’s so cool how nostalgic these threads are, and how far the detailing world has come to nowadays:

Wes details an Audi R8

Wes details an LSB E46 M3

Wes details a Ferrari Testarossa

Wes inspired me to invest and build my detailing product arsenal, to the point where I grew my business, started charging more, and eventually specialized in high-end vehicle restorations and paint corrections locally, before closing and starting my professional career in the insurance industry at the age of 23.

I wanted this moment to come back full circle, or you could say “full-moon” haha, and that’s why I wanted the guy who inspired me to start to my own business to be the person who performed this extensive job on Project Luna…what a story if you ask me.

What’s also funny is that Wes had no idea who I was until I reached out to him to work on Project Sky back a few years ago to polish some carbon fiber parts. When I had shared with him the above story, he was surprised that he had made such an impact on someone like myself, and was touched. Him and I started building a friendship, and we noticed we had lots in common, like being hip-hop music fans of Larry June, Westside Gunn and the Griselda movement, etc…small world indeed.

Wes was going to perform the following restoration job on Project Luna:

Interior Cleaning Work
  • Interior detail including sunroof railing
  • Polish Piano Black Interior Trim Pieces including Tachometer and any plastic piece possible
  • Leather Coating on Interior Leather Surfaces with GTechniq Leather Guard
  • Plastic Coating on Interior Trim Pieces with GTechniq Ultra Exo V5 and Crystal Serum Light (CSL)
  • Fabric Coating on Interior Carpets with CarPro CQuartz Fabric

Exterior Cleaning Work
  • 1-Stage Polish including Claybar and Exhaust Cleaning
  • Polish Headlights and Headlight Washers, Front Bumper Amber Reflectors, Chrome Kidney Grilles, License Plate Holder, Roof Rails, Tail Lights, Roof Antenna Cover, Window Trims, Mirror Stalks, Chrome Fender Vents, BMW Emblems, B-Pillars,
  • Stock Wheels Cleaned, Wheel Weight Adhesive removed, and Coated with GTechniq Crystal Serum Light (CSL)
  • OG Mag Blue TE37s Cleaned
  • Ceramic Coating on all Exterior Surfaces mentioned above, including miscellaneous sections including Door Jambs, Trunk Jambs, Exhaust, Hood Underside, and Windows with GTechniq Ultra Exo V5 and Crystal Serum Light (CSL)
**Please note that all ceramic coating work was done by Wes@Orion Detailing after the necessary PPF film was applied by Steven@Elevated Auto.

After Wes polished all of the surfaces that were able to be polished (painted and plastics), I had Steven and his right-hand and PPF specialist, John, perform all of the necessary Tint and PPF work as follows:
  • Complete Vehicle Window Tint (Front Windshield, Sunroof, all Side Windows and Rear Window) with LLumar AIR 90
  • PPF on Full Body (including Headlights and Headlight Washers, Front Bumper Amber Reflectors, Chrome Kidney Grilles, License Plate Holder, Roof Rails, Tail Lights, Roof Antenna Cover, Window Trims, Mirror Stalks, Chrome Fender Vents, BMW Emblems, B-Pillars, and Interior Piano Black Trim Pieces) with XPEL Ultimate Plus
  • ExoShield Front Windshield Protective Film

While Project Sky is getting worked on, I will be borrowing the Volk OG TE37 Mag Blue 18x10+25 and putting them on Luna. Once Sky is finished, the OEM 220M wheels will go back on.

Unfortunately we did not capture a ton of photos, as we were filming all the content for my documentary on the car, which documents all of the above, and the origin story of how I got the car…how exciting is that?!! Miru is Steven’s content director, and is the mastermind behind the movie project and its vision.

Enjoy the pictures of what we were able to capture:

I took some pictures with Project Luna. I was later joined by John, Steven and Miru for a nice picture altogether:

Concluding Thoughts

Hope you all enjoyed this update! I’m grateful to have the support of Orion Detailing and Elevated Auto for Project Luna. It’s amazing how important lasting friendships are, and the power of the Internet to allow for these forums to be seen globally and have the ability to inspire anyone.

Stay tuned for next update, a little sneak peek for what’s to come!

UPDATE #4: The Prequel to the Documentary

Hey everyone and welcome back to my journal!

Small update here for Project Luna.

Get Your Popcorn Ready
