IND sells a tow strap and cover, can just install it once and leave it alone!

The cover & strap, I've been using it for >1 year, makes life easier.

Tire pressure gauge?.. didn't see that mentioned. Talk to people see what they're running. Check pressures before and after sessions. I like to take a point and shoot temperature laser too: measure brake temp and anything else after sessions..

You know what you REALLY need to have for your first HPDE?

A friend.

That's what got me through the first half dozen days on track. Buddies that bring their own tools, tent, chairs, water...whatever to mooch off of, until I got up to speed and collected all the tools to pack the trunk. I wasn't there at the track by myself trying to feel my way around, in the middle of being overwhelmed by the sensory inputs and the information my instructor was jamming through my ears straight into my brain.

Even if you don't have friends who have done dozens of events, bring someone who's a car enthusiast along. You'll appreciate the company between the downtimes, and they'll appreciate the environment.

And if you feel guilty about borrowing someone else's tools, don't be. What you'll find is people who track their cars are COOL about their tools. I've had complete strangers pull up next to me to ask if they can borrow my $300 torque wrench, and I would have zero qualms about lending it to them no questions asked. Once you start accumulating your own tools (or cooler full of alcoholic drinks) you will find yourself sharing that stuff with others who don't at the track, because someone else did it for you before.

In 20 years I have NEVER once found myself not being able to source a tool from someone in the paddocks. I bring a basic set of tools that I need, and a few specialized ones that I think others might need, and that's it. And hookers and booze.

I was actually talking to my dad about coming to the next one just to have some company. I hear it’s exactly like you describe though. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m guessing that Sunday I’ll be signing up for a few more. Lol. All my friends that race are down in Houston. I may run down there for a couple.

Enjoying this thread!

How about some cannabis for after? That's what I would bring, some 1:1 to use during the day to help stay calm and focused and then some flower to roll fatties to pass around after.

Have fun!

Also one thing I have been curious about. Do you tip the instructors? May sound funny but not sure.

A good way to make friends is to bring an ice chest with like 8 extra waters and offer them to your neighbors. People will love you.

My first session at an HDPE I bought my instructor lunch. It was a way to say thanks, plus we had time to talk about the morning etc. Not as formal as a tip...

I've been offered a tip 3x in my few years of instructing. All three times I suggested they donate to the club (since that club has a charity arm) or to the community group that advocates for our track (Portland International Raceway is city owned, but a volunteer group helps volunteer and lobbies for it).

One time, a 911 owner, left me $100 in my track car after I politely declined two times then left before I could give it back lol.

I've heard from friends that instruct at Supercar experiences tend to get tips. But not for normal HPDE/track days.

Tipping at Hpde's is always welcomed by me anyway. It is a nice gesture that says that the client acknowledges you and your service. Nothing more. Instructing for clubs is great but it is also a lot of work and most clubs do not pay, so anything helps. Money is great, a bought lunch or a beer after the day is always welcomed.

Up to you if you want to or not.

Regarding tip, I always tell my customers that they ought to at least buy me a beer after the hell they put me through.

Unless it’s a hot, young attractive girl (we get that sometimes) then I tell her the progress she’s made all day is all the tip I’ll ever need.

It was awesome. Got held up a lot from slower drivers but it was very fun and learned some good stuff. Was out at MSR Cresson. It’s amazing how sitting on your ass can wear you out. I think a seat/harness will help. Then I’m not fighting to stay in the seat. Was a cooler day and street tires are not good. Already have a plan for that. Other than tires though there’s not a thing I think I need to upgrade right away. These cars are a blast to drive on the track. I will def be back for many many more. Thanks everyone for the tips and help. Thankfully I didn’t need any of the 200 tools I took. Haha
