Metal on metal sound when in gear and decreasing

Hi all,

Today I was driving around town with the windows down. From the exterior, it sounded like metal on metal contact when I stayed in gear and took my foot off the accelerator. The lower the RPM's got, the more noticeable the sound became.

Is this a sign that the clutch or transmission needs a check/ replacement?
