Sorry to hear that.

On a less serious note, I think we all need to get a louder exhaust to drone out the cowbells. LOL.

Good luck with the dealer. I hope they actually find something. Please share the results of their findings if you can. Thanks.

I absolutely love the description of this as a "cowbell" sound. I had seen this thread earlier and had a chuckle, and then today it started happening to me. I knew exactly what it was based on the sound--cowbell is dead-on. It's the left rear wheel. I'll pull it in the AM and see if there's a pebble in the dust shield.

I really suspect it has something to do with something stuck in the rotors. When I washed the car last week, I sprayed a stream of water l at it moving nozzle left and right and heard the exact sound. Car was still and parked.

When I pulled the rear wheel off the other day, I couldn't find an obvious pebble in the dust shield, but then again it's hard to push my shields away from the rotors because they've been trimmed to fit my StopTech brakes. The noise continued until this weekend when I drove down to New Jersey for a trackday. Now that I'm back home, the noise is gone.

Add me to the list of the cowbell noise sickness. I had it happen last week while on a BMW drive. I was backing out and heard the infamous sound. It went away as our speeds increased but it was back when I got home.

I jacked up the back end of the car, rotated the wheels by hand, and sure enough traced the sound to the right rear wheel. I pulled the wheel off and did a few more rotations. The noise eventually went away (and hasn't been back since). However, there were no signs of a rock on the ground.

I'm glad I found this thread. Joke about it if you will, this thread has been really helpful.

After a day of driving (and a couple high speed stops), the noise went away by itself. Hope this isn't a reoccurring problem.

Your hope is vain

This is a recurring problem.

Mine comes and goes every couple weeks it seems. Only good way to make it stop is to drive it hard for a couple turns and hope whatever is stuck in there pops out.

Brought mine to the dealership this morning. They said it was the brake backing plate rubbing up against the disc. Hopefully this solves the problem.

when you say "hopefully this solves the problem," what do you mean by it? what did they do to FIX IT? so we know the cause now, but what's the fix?

I actually haven't had any problems since they took the stone out of my rotor. It appears that there are multiple causes for the sound, which may explain why it is so common.

Just curious what side people hear this on. 100% of the time its the driver side rear wheel that has this issue... we need a poll!

I have this "cowbell" sound on and off as the rest of the folks here. For weeks i thought it is a stone, especially since it went away - stone dislodged?? but came back. Then I found stones between the disc and the heatshield after track days and no sound at all??

Just had this happen to me this week. Washed the car on Sunday, had the noise on Tuesday. It went away and then happened again yesterday afternoon. I called BMW in Midlothian here in VA and asked them if I could bring it by for them to hear it, but of course by the time I got there it had stopped. They told me to take a log of when it tends to happen and if it keeps happening to bring my log to them and schedule an appointment.

I figured I would let the car sit for a few hours at home, cool off, and then try it again at night. I tried it and no sound, so I figured I'd wait more to see if it did it this morning. Bam, did it again this morning pulling out of the same spot it was left in all night. Drove it to work and it seemed to stop. I'll try it again at lunch and see if it does it again, but in MY case it seems it might be the e-brake and not a rock. It's the same pinging, hollow, empty tin can sound coming from the rear driver side wheel area.

I did the same thing, freaked out and went underneath the car to see what was hanging from it, but found nothing. Nothing was loose or anything when I pushed it with my screwdriver. No issues when driving on the highways (the sound only occurs when pulling out of a parking space going at low speeds).

Tomorrow when I have time I am going to take the thing apart and see if I can either find a rock or adjust the ebrake spring and see how this pans out. Will post an update here. If it still doesn't go away I'll take it to the dealer and let them figure it out...

Well my daughter thought it was hilarious following in her car and she could hear it with the windows closed.
Took it to the dealer as I couldn't locate any stones. They found them though. Charged me £63 but then that's the rate for 30 mins labour. Unfortunately they washed the car as well so I'll expect scratches.
Anyway, it's fixed; no more embarrassing cow bells.

Ever since I adjusted the e-brake 1 click in reverse (as I posted in post #67) I haven't heard the noise again. That was about 300-400 miles ago. I'll report back if it happens again.

Same here. I thought it was my Akra expanding / contracting due to temperature differences. I also think, need to check, that I can hear the noise with the car stopped. Stones also make sense, lots of gravel on our roads. See how this is mostly happenign to people in NY, IL, WA... cold, winter states.
