Toyo RR or Federal FZ201
Anyone try any of these tires?
Tried out the rr but they were my friends as loaners when I bent my wheel. Felt so grippy. They were at 13 heat cycles but some were after w2w racing sessions (long). Granted the car is light (e46m race car). FZ201 are just dirt cheap and I've read some reviews that they're better than nt01 (I guess some are 40/60/100 tw based on what size you get or something weird like that. I had r1s last 7 hc and drop off. I have a set of pirelli scrubs that I'm trying out next but basically want to go back to a tire that last more than a couple of days. Hero mode already unlocked but that's way to short life for what I'm doing. Thinking of trying these two a shot and then prob going back to nt01 and add aero possibly. TIA

What size were you thinking about on the Federals. They don't have 275/35/18. They only have 265 which has a 10.5 section width which is quite a bit narrower than 275 NT 01. They also have a 285/30/18 which has a section width of 11.2 which is about the same as the 275 RC 1.

I have a set of 265/35/18 FZ-201 in my garage, $155/corner to me shipped, but I need to finish off the NT01s I have before I get to them. If they are even close to the NT01, it's a great deal, but I doubt it will pan out.
I have been trying the 595 RS-RR on my E36 V8. They are good considering the price ($115 a corner shipped), but not the last word. I consider them a good option for guys who eat through a LOT of tires like I do, and want to keep the budget under control. |

I'm sorry, I don't have them mounted so I can't give you a useful width measure until I do. And even then it will be for 265/35/18, and on 9.5" square wheelsets.
BUT I will do my best to use up my NT01's at the track this month so I can move on to the Fuzzies. I'm going to VIR in October and I would like something with some tread in case of rain. |

Regarding the FZ201, I can only repeat what I've heard, so take it with a grain of salt... If memory serves, the guy who tried them said they were relatively similar in grip to an NT01, maybe a hair less, but that they handle heat well (better than the NT01). Also, I don't know if this is the case for all the tires in that class, but for the FZ201 until you get some heat in them they will be slippery as hell. |

They're not perfect though... They both still get greasy after a few hot laps and I've noticed cracking after being mounted for about ~10 months. For the price, hard to beat. Really excited for some RE71Rs but wish NT01S came in better 18in sizes. Maybe I'll just try the FZ next.

I finally ran my NT-01s down to the end -- on the last session of the last track day I'm having this year. So, the FZs will spend the winter bagged up in heated storage, and we'll see how they do in the spring.

Just find a good source for used pirelli DHs in your sizes, and stock up. They can be had for $400ish/set online, but if you can find a team nearby and scoop up their scrubs $0-$200/set is reasonable.

I tried the FZs but my only comparisons on the same track are to RSRR Tires, I ran substantially faster on the FZs (4 seconds faster on a 1:30 second track) and they wear well too. I was running on the 100utqg tires and they're like iron. I will be running them at Laguna and will have a good apples to apples comparison in the next week.
*** Caveats: - I installed a Stoptech BBK since running the same track with the RSRR - A lot of the time can be attributed to just learning the track and seat time. The RSRR day was 8 months ago and I drove a lot this year. - My recent day on the FZs was 70* weather vs the 100* weather with the RSRR. I ran NT01s on different tracks a few years back so I don't have any strong data points but I will be going FZ>NT01 from now on if I'm not doing time trial stuff where I'm forced to run 200tread tires.

Sorry, my post was confusing... For general track days/HPDE I will continue to use the FZ over the NT01 but for competition driving that requires 180-200 and higher UTQG I will probably run the RE71R. I've actually only run RE71R a few times and my times weren't that much better than the RSRR which is crazy for a sub $100/tire
