Background info, I just bought an '08 M3 with 54k miles. Rod bearings supposedly done. No prior analysis, so I'm going to start a baseline with this. Thanks in advance.

The motor is spec'd for 10w60. There's not a ton of difference between the various 10w60s out there so my advice would be to just get whichever is cheapest or easiest.

Nothing wrong with the Red Line, either. Whether or not you're okay with running a "non-approved" viscosity is up to you. Plenty of people have run 0w40 and other viscosities.

Anyone who has actually had a stroker built knows this is pure bullscrap. Pistons from Mahle Motorsport? That will be 12 weeks please. A balanced stroker crank? Give it another 12. Honing and boring the block? Can only be done after you have the pistons. Etc etc etc

Buy the parts ahead of time? LOL. The working capital needs would be epic
I've been in business for 7-1/2 years. 473 s85 builds, 81 of them are strokers. Have done a few dozen s65, then also s63tu, etc. My engine builds are in 33 different countries.

For what it's worth, 5w50 redline is best. The s65 and s85 have variable oil pump you will get same oil pressure as 10w60 but have significantly faster oil heating and significantly better cold start oil flow which saves bearing wear and keeps the motor cleaner. Look on my Instagram for more info it is @troyjeup

So out of the ~2000 working days of the past 7.5 years you have assembled an engine at a rate of 4 days per engine?

Cool.

Mahle must have a dedicated production line just for your use.

Show me bearings of an engine with 5W50 all it's life with some miles on em, they'll we can talk. Until then it is just a theory with no proven or knowledgeable experience to back it.

Several S65s have blown up after switching to 0w40 but that doesn't mean it's conclusive evidence it was caused by 0w40, just like whatever advice is going on here.

I use 5w50 Redline because I like how it smells a little like sourdough bread, and I've never blown up after eating sourdough bread

I have been using M1 0W40 for 5 years but bought some M1 5W50 to try, mainly because the oil is running 10-15F hotter with the 10-15F hotter coolant thermostat and I am curious whether the thicker oil will drop the temp a few degrees. Probably not, but it will handle the hotter temperature better, although 0W40 is fine at 235F.

Did I read somewhere that folks are getting shorter warm-up times using the Shell "BMW Twin Power Mega Turbo-Supercharger" oil ? ...which is also a 10W-60 ..

I ask because it's hot AF here in Texas, and the 60 weight has kept both S65 M3s that i've owned at around 210 F highway operating temp... even in the summer.

The 5W-50 sounds nice for start-ups, at least...

My car ran above 220 in super hot weather on the highway just cruising at 75 before the bearing change (18k miles ago) and hasn’t gone above 210 without beating on it since the rod bearing change.

I’m sure I can’t say if it’s oil related or not but I do know my car runs lower temps on the highway according to the factory extremely accurate (lol) gauge with BE bearings on 5w50 than it did on stock bearings with 0w40, or 10w60f or 5w50. So I don’t know much, lol

Main thing I like about the redline 5w50 is consumption has dropped to the point where I can change it at 5-6000 mile intervals without having to add any in between, and it seems to me to be a better oil for anpurely street driven car than the 10w60’s

And any of these synthetic oils in the various weights used are fine at higher operating temps like 235F or 250F.

I've used Redline for years
A cocktail of (3) 5w50 and (6) 10w60
Next oil change I'll go 5:4

How many RB services were on S65 approximately?

The only RB poll on this forum seems to be for original owners-34 participants-1RB failure. Too bad there isnt a public VIN specific database for RB service/failures.

(3000 RB services at 8 hours each /8 work hours a day /365 days a year =8.2 years)

Wishful thinking if you believe something like that can ever exist.

I was being pedantic.

I've done 7 s65s, 3 s54s, but i'm not a shop and actively seek to not work on other people's cars

Did you seriously think he did 3,000 RB jobs?

No not at all. In fact the opposite. In another thread someone made a similar claim that amounted to 1 out of 66 engines. I would rather see accurate numbers.

Get off your high horse, accurate numbers on rb replacements will never exist.

If I had to guess, I would guess that at most 10% of M3s have had rod bearings replaced. I would guess that maybe 1% of M3 have had catastrophic engine failures. BMW may know how many bearing sets it has sold, VAC may know how many it has sold, BE probably knows how many it has sold, and ACL probably knows its sales. I doubt anyone would get the info from them but if you are curious, you could try. BMW won’t provide it given there have been lawsuits, but maybe that info will come out in a lawsuit.

I think its less than that. MRF posted they have changed about 400 recently. I figure about a 1000 have been changed of 66k.

Way more than 1000 have been changed. MRF is 1 shop in the world and has done 400. And he uses only VAC bearings. If only 1000 had been done that would mean VAC sold to no one else, BE has sold only a few hundred sets and BMW has sold only a few hundred set.
