I had to go a different store too to grab one. Only 2 or 3 left at that store too. Repco do a 50% off too in Dec/Jan.

I wouldn't say up to temp otherwise you'd be waiting a long time for it to cool enough so you don't burn yourself, but just a quick drive around the block should be fine.

I like to get the oil decently hot before changing. Unless you have access to a hoist, the oil is going to be cooling down while you raise the car on jacks or ramps. I read that the recommended drain time is 1 hour, so hot oil will help drain it all out. I can assure you from experience that the oil keeps draining from both sumps for a LONG time and waiting the full hour is worth it.

I also recommend a long drive before doing the final level adjustment with the new oil. I drove for 10 km and adjusted for the middle of the oil level range. After driving another 10 km the level was almost at max.

That's still $88/5L i.e. retail price from SCA. Not sure why you went with a 20L drum in one go when you can pick up 2 x 5L ones during 50% off sales for the yearly service.

This was back in 2016. They were phasing out the TWS professional which was the recommended oil for the M3 throughout its life, and the oil the engine was designed with. I think the dealers were using Shell oil at the point because of some fall out with contract negotiations with Castrol (something like that, can't quite remember now). TWS supercar is very similar, but I believe there are different additives. I've since moved to TWS supercar because it's the most similar and TWS professional is impossible to get now.

TWS is referring to Castrol.

BMW and Castrol were partnered for decades. I believe they developed the predecessor for TWS together for their race cars. There's a guy on the bobistheoilguy site that worked on the early development of the oil and he said BMW sung their praises for the Castrol oil. BMW used Castrol TWS in their race cars and all high performance road cars. The S65 was designed, built and tested using Castrol TWS Edge Professional. This was up until 2015 when they signed a deal with Shell. TWS Edge Professional then became really hard to get your hands on, but was preferred by most M owners at the time.

https://www.autoevolution.com/news/b...ier-88737.html

Castrol TWS Supercar didn't come out till 2017. It's been said that it's the same formulation with the identical API SN, but may have different additives.

I've considered Shell Helix, Liqui Moly, but I think if it's good enough for BMW race cars, it's good enough for my M3.
