E92 vs F80
Hi all folks,
I need some inputs if you would like to have an M's one which one would you go. Costs, legendary, style, maintenance, looks and so on! I know e92 would be run about 20k plus inspections and maintenance. It would be round up to 40k for all mods and more toys in the long period. F80 would be around 50k one time plus adding some mods in the future. No track just enjoy a ride for the first M car. Thanks |

I don’t know. I’d say both of these are on my bucket list. Test drive both and see what you like most. I’d say for long term ownership the e92 simply because it’s unique due to its v8 and will become a future collectible. F80 is not even at the bottom of depreciation yet, so maybe wait while.

You should drive both and if unable to come to the only logical conclusion possible, you might as well get a bicycle.
Things to be on the lookout for: 1. Instant throttle response. 2. Induction noise. 3. A steering that tells you what's going on. 4. Exhaust note: a) That is, unless you're into spectacular flatulence that only a perpetual diet of beans and garlic can begin to induce. 5. True ///M Division principles of large, naturally-aspirated engines. 6. Exterior aesthetics (a proper hood line and round halos). |

I don't seen anything unique or iconic in terms of engine, feel, tech, etc... in the F80 that the G80 won't have (except for not having that ugly kidney front).
F80's will drop hard when the G80 comes out. E46 or E9X will bring you smiles during a sunday morning drive no doubt. Not because it's the fasting thing out there - it's the sound, feeling, and the willingness to get wrung out. |

Hey man I've had an E92 M3, but I then I traded for an E90 M3. I also got a F80 M3. I'm happy to help you decide. It's a tough decision because both cars are great in their own way. Obviously this is the E9x forums, so there will be more love towards that by default haha.
So if this was a weekend toy/track/cruise just for fun car I think the E9x is a good buy. The value has plateaued, and could possible go up depending on spec and mileage. The car makes amazing sounds, the interior may seem dated but it's simple approach makes it seem timeless minus navi screen quality haha. The gas mileage, I know who cares, but if you daily the car this should be a factor. On track the car is amazing, maybe not the fastest but what an experience and the smooth throttle inputs are appreciated. Now if this was a daily car plus a track toy the F80 makes sense. It's great on gas, and if you don't straight pipe the car and do a AA Midpipe or the new equal length exhaust the car sounds awesome! Very subjective, but I love the noises. The tech is updated, navi is up to date, body in my eyes does look a little bit sexier (subjective). The car makes insane power everywhere, even down low. And the car for that reason is a little bit more of a hand full on track due to boost. This can be controlled with a patient/smooth foot. People love to blame the car, but it's their foot control lol. Also, some tunes really exaggerate this spiky behavior, so that doesn't help either. The car isn't holding value much at all, but that's good for anyone looking to buy haha. But the value has taken the brunt of depreciation, I don't see major tanking happening soon. Also, if it matters when cruising with supercars the F80 literally amazes people how they can hang with the big dogs. If your still here congrats haha! Honestly, you can't go wrong with either car. But if this car will be driven lightly go with the E9x! It's a collectible and this might be your chance for a clean one. The F8x is newer so you'll always have a chance to get the car. And it'll only get cheaper. Unless people actually realize how great the F8x is, but that's wishful thinking haha. Anyway, lmk if you have any questions! Hard to tell someone which would be better - its really a personal choice. The F8x is a great platform - but I prefer the E9x. But it is really individual here - I do not need the latest tech - my phone covers the nav & as long as I have bluetooth and can talk hands free then I'm good. I find the E9x more comfortable (love the seats especially vs the F8x comp seats). The S65 makes plenty of power for me on the street & love the sounds. The chassis on the F8x is improved over the previous generation - but for me on the street the E9x is still excellent. One thing to consider with the F8x platform is that the early years did not put power down as well as the later years.
I will note that for me to get the E9x to the level I am happy with on the street it takes a few mods. Exhaust, tune, some carbon fiber pretty stuff - intake is also a worthy upgrade for more aural enjoyment. That is where I am at with my E90 M3 and it has become my favorite street car I have owned. Also the E9x is no slouch when it comes to the track if you ever decide to go that direction. Plus it is an awesome experience - just so much fun to wring it out on the track. The F8x is definitely ahead out of the box but with a bit of love the E9x can get there too. Of course you can do that to with the F8x too & it will be a rocket. OP mentioned E92 & F80 so not sure if two or four doors matters - if two doors is okay don't discount the F87 platform either - another solid choice

Also it looks like BMW is going to nickel and dime it's customers more for things people like on the m3. I don't think they are doing power bump on hood but of course they'll bring it back for the comp or CS model or whatever. It's true though that the f8x prices will drop when g8x hits, but time might be kinder to the f8x than you think. Not that long ago the e9X was covered just a gas guzzling boat of an m3. |

Will chime in here with some comments, since last year I ended up needing to replace a destroyed E92. During the replacement process I looked at an F82, as well as an M2 and M2C. That is in addition to some other cars including a 718 Boxster and a GT350, as well as joining a friend to ride in some cars such as C63 S coupe. It should also be noted that I have a fairly aggressively tuned N54 535XI wagon as a daily/beater. And had a modded up N54 335XI and had modded turbo Saabs before that.
From all these cars, I’ve decided most modern turbo cars all feel very “samey”. The old cars at least had major lag and a kick before you took off, which is fun. Modern turbos, though, build boost quickly and you “ride the wave” until boost tapers off and you grab the next gear. The transition from 335i to M3 was actually a challenge, because you have to drive the S65 as hard as you can at a corner to really keep it on boil. The 335i was more of a coasting feeling, just sit in the torque band and you’re good. As a result, the F8xs start feeling like pumped up 335s with a lot more capability. Granted, the S55 feels like a factory big turbo N54, so it’s fast as hell even stock. The N55 can’t match that punch stock, but wouldn’t feel very different with a Pure stage 2 strapped to it. If you have another modern turbocharged car in your driveway, I think the fun of the F8x will be reduced just because they will feel similar in most situations. This is a big reason why I came back to the E92. It’s a unique driving experience compared to every other modern performance car, and a nice change of pace from my wagon. The GT350 was close but was just massive, with numb steering, felt unplayful in corners, had poor street gearing and a crap interior. Exciting motor, even though it smelled of oil and one of the cars started smoking after a light pull. Straight up, the F8x is objectively the better car to the E9x in every way. The M2s are more playful than the M3/M4, but their interior is on par (maybe even worse) with the Mustang and they ride like ASS. I swear the only goal with the M2 was to create a drift machine with the short wheel base, aggressive torque and super stiff suspension. Also, everyone keeps saying the equal length exhausts fixes the S55, but I still think it turns it into a generic sounding 6 cylinder. I just heard a V6 Mustang that made a shocking similar noise. Still better than stock, at least. Last one I test drove with the windows rolled down, and it was cringingly bad around city streets. When driving around fast, the noise disappears behind you and you just get the active sound, which is an improvement. I also think the F8xs have a distinctly digital feel to them, like the electronics want to be doing the driving for you. You can say the E9x has a lot of electronics, but it still feels pretty analog when you drive. Going forward into the future, I think the F8x biggest problem is that the future platforms are going to surpass it, and that the F8x won’t have any unique points to help it stick out from "superior in every way" future cars. It may be a saving grace to it if the G8x is indeed that ugly, because otherwise I think it will go down as the E36 does to the E46. All that said, the F8x is still the better car to the E9x in objective metrics. But for the subjective side, I choose the E92. Anyway, the E92 is more than fast enough to enjoy on a weekend drive. And instead of seeing how big a number I can get, I can enjoy listening to that engine, feeling the road through my fingertips and driving a car that feels truly wired to my brain. |
