Hello everyone.

I recently purchased a set of wheels with tires that were said to have NO track time, no hard heat cycles and ONLY 1125 miles as per seller. Seller lives in Texas(not sure if that makes a difference).

Toyos Proxes R888R

Are R compound tires tread depth measured differently than street tires? The shape is different ?

#1, don't ever buy R888R unless you plan to barbecue something on them after lighting the set on fire. It is a piece of shit tire. I threw mine away because I couldn't bring myself to keep using them.

It's pretty clear those have track use on them. Mine looked similar after a weekend when they went into the garbage

Thank you for the input. Unfortunately it was not my choice of tire but the wheels that I wanted.

So do these tires look way more worn down then they should be after less than 1500 miles of street driving?

for sure. 1500 miles of street driving = new tires. These are not new, they are pretty beaten up!

Did you not get photos before buying? If not, good luck proving they lied to you. I'm not sure if that's track use or not, but for 1100 miles that looks pretty heavily worn. If it wasn't tracked, their alignment was fucked and/or they were doing tons of burnouts.

I'd just send it and chock it up as a lesson learned.

And yes, R888R is garbage-tier. As I've said on here before, everyone seems to try that tire once and swears to never run it again.

I’m going to run them for another month until I switch to winters. I’ll get a more street tire with 9/32nds next time.

Yes lesson learned. My original wheels needed rear tires too and were all beat up. So I’m back to square 1 but with clean wheels

Drove them in rain yesterday. Didn’t slide anywhere but you need to either play loud music or have a gintani exhaust time overpower the noise

I have gotten 10k miles out of R compounds in strictly street driving. The tread wear rating on “full tread” R compounds might be 60 to 100 rather than 200-300 you find on high performance street and of course the rubber is softer in order to be stickier so expect more wear, more noise and more road debris sticking to the tires. Toyo RA1 are an old but still good R compound that have a little more tread and are better in the rain than the R888.

For the OP, there are 2 choices to make the best out of the current situation. 1 is to put the pair with more tread on the rear, which wears nearly 2x as fast as the fronts in street driving. This will balance the wear out. 2 is to put the worn ones back on the rear and run them until the wear bars are gone. Just don’t drive in the rain. Then replace the rears. I would do #1.

A tire we have used for racing that hold up well with track use is the Hankook Ventus RS4. That said, the Hankooks are close to the same price as the Pilot Sport 4S. My PS4S tires have 20,000KM+ on them and the rears are not even half worn yet - fronts look near new (perhaps I need to drive faster...).

At least you got a clean set of wheels!!

Becuase for many other areas it works. Your PS4 will not hold 800whp and neither will hankooks, people talk so much about this tire as if it’s only had once use yet people that don’t road race with this tire use it with Tripple the power of your cars and make it work. In fact cars making 1800 plus hp are able to effectively use this tire. They buy them in the 100s each month and around February it will be sold out that’s why it’s still made.

Not sure what your point is here. The OP is not putting tires on a 1800HP car. The comments are that R888 tires are garbage on the M3 and other tires are far more effective than the R888.

It is good to hear that some people have found a use for them other than for heating their house in winter.

I replied to them if you can’t find the point you may have some other issue. And I also happen to use r888rs on my sc m3 and for a tire to use on the street they are great. I do 1/4 mile,half mile event. And occasionally road course. The r888rs were a nice improvement over the 1st gen.

Well now I know why people use them. Not for road racing. Which is neat.

We have used a ton of different tires in road racing and, besides Westlake tires, the R888 is pretty terrible. Not overly fast and they wear very quickly. We do not race 1000+ hp cars though.

So good to know there is a use for the R888 other than to keep you warm in winter.

Only issue I had with R888r was leaving DC and I got caught in a bad rain storm lol. Literally was driving sideways for a good bit. It's not that bad of a tire if you understand what you're purchasing. Do your research people!

Back on topic, those rear tires are shot. Fronts are soon to be on their way out too.

Thank you for all the responses. I will never purchase these tires ever again. These are louder then my v8 and exhaust put together. So at the end of the day, I bought a clean set of wheels vs my old ones being beat up and broke even because my other set needed tires as well.

I am looking into a new set of tires in spring time. I’ll be shopping for a winter set as we speak. It is staying in the 60s now and it’s more of a weekend car for me.

I enjoy to have a little fun here and there but do not find tires that wear out in 10K miles to be of any use. I have been reading the PS4S is the hot tire(priciest too)

Yes, that is another undesirable quality of the R888R: they are just insanely loud.

Even if I had a 2000hp car I still don't think I could put up with the tire noise. It's just insane. You need earplugs to drive around on the street... and mind you I have a really loud exhaust

Yup, the PS4s is the best all round street tire. If you're looking for something that can do dual duty really well (street+track) I'd get the RE71R, which drives like a pillow made of baby feathers compared to the R888R
