Break-in attempted... damaged lock help please
Parked the M3 in central Lille overnight and some clowns have tried to break-in using a screw driver to pop the lock barrel out of the drivers door (and failed thankfully although no idea how they expected to start the car).
Looks like I'll need to replace the whole door handle assembly as one part but has anyone else had this happen and able to advise please? Also not sure whether BMW will supply the handle painted (Jerez black) with a replacement emergency key and roughly how much this is all going to cost? Cheers Ben |

I went with the delete on mine. Unless the handle itself was damaged, replacing the lock is pretty easy. Peel back the rubber seal in the door jam...there's a hole for a screw driver...loosen 1 screw and it pops out.

Sorry for the delay... just got around to uploading the pictures from my BlackBerry. Looks like the damage is just confined to the barrel which is only £55+VAT from my dealer plus a little bit of paint damage from the screwdriver used to prise the lock surround off. Still not sure whether they actually managed to get into the car but nothing was stolen!

Same thing happened to me. I got mine replaced at the dealer, was going to go for the key delete, but I've had experiences in Manhattan for some reason or another that the key fob doesn't work and had to use the physical key to get in. I've talked to a few tow truck drivers and said there is something broadcasting around the city that interferes with the radio waves for some remote fobs on cars. It's probably for jamming any remote devices that may set off bombs or something. Not sure if your area is affected but if not, go for the delete.

Seems like it would have just been easier to bust the window
I had a similar experience a few years ago...only with my truck. You might look at the keyhole delete. Little cheaper.

Thanks all... the keyhole delete would have been an option had the replacement lock cost a lot more but given its relatively low cost (famous last words) I'm going to stick with the key in case my remote fob lets me down.
