That's what I was afraid of... Is your friend planning on changing out his rear section now?

I was really hoping I wouldn't have to mess with my rear section, but sounds like I'll need to suck it up and drop $600 on a Megan exhaust if I want TPs. Lots of people run the Megan with regular TPs and are very happy so I'm not sure if the resonated ones are necessary at that point, but I would think they would provide a more refined sound and are worth the extra couple hundred bucks.

Does anyone else have first hand experience with both resonated and non-resonated test pipes? I'm having trouble coming to a conclusion on whether there is a worthwhile difference between the two.

I have resonated Rogue test pipes with Megan catback, sounds nice and deep,no drone or rasp, not loud when driven on highway under 3500 rpm .Gets loud for minute or two on cold startup when air pump kicks in but that can be tuned out.

Resonated TP
Any thoughts or opinions on a full stock exhaust system with just a primary cat delete?
* Will resonated test pipes get me as loud as say a catback eisenmann race? * Will non resonated test pipes induce drone? I don't mind it getting louder than a resonated TP system. Just wary of drone Thanks |

I had a AA xpipe with HFC+resonators paired to an OEM muffler. There was barely any noticeable change in sound. The stock rear muffler is way too restrictive for sound, pretty much no matter what you do ahead of it short of a full catless straight through xpipe.

Wow. Didn't know this. I think I'll probably go with the resonated test pipes for now and keep the secondary cats and resonators. This way, when I eventually swap out the muffler, I won't have drone (hopefully)

Update: I deleted the primary cats and kept the rest of the setup stock. It's only slightly louder (can barely tell) until 3k rpm. After 3 k and depending on your throttle position, it's really loud, but not super pleasant. It's a little tinny but not horrible sounding. Definitely won't stay with the stock muffler for long though.

I've been there with a cat-less xpipe and it was very tinny sounding. |

Yup. Going to keep scanning the For sale classifieds for a Corsa catback maybe. Not super certain on that yet though. What route did you then take? |

I have the rouge resonated test pipes and did the 2-pipe mod myself.
I think it still sounds pretty good and you can still keep the car quiet when you want to. I know this isn't the ACM mod but figured It's some kind of noise reference. Yes, that is a burble map I'm playing with that you hear at the end Also, sorry for the shitty video, I was trying to capture the sound on the bridge and shift at the same time. |

I don't think there is as much difference between the ACM mod and 2-pipe mod as people say. When you get rid of the perforated pipes you are essentially bypassing the muffler chamber just like ACM. It may be just a tad quieter but we're splitting hairs here. I also don't think there is much difference between resonated and non-resonated TPs. Again - splitting hairs.

Thanks guys, yeah I love the sound. It's perfect for me. I also disabled the cold start so it's not a raging beast in the mornings.
I have the Alex Alpine tune. I love it and he's great to work with. I did the rod bearings, resonated test pipes, thermostat, spark plugs, motor mounts, and tune at the same time so it really feels like a whole new car. I'v never heard the ACM mod in person so I can't comment on it. This is probably as loud as I would ever want it though. Just right. Last edited by qbnlykwhoa; 05-03-2018 at 01:16 PM.. |

I honestly don't hear any drone whatsoever with my ACM mod.

Well let me added some context, I was around 48 years old. For many of us at that age, If it is to be loud as a daily driver, it must also be elegant. Think more of a gentlemen's bad ass instead of boyracer. The cat-less + oem combo was a no no. The kids loved it. I had to remove the Xpipe and returned it (smell was too bad also). Next was the oem xpipe and the AA exhaust. This was the beautiful combo that garnered compliments everyday from every member of society (lol). Problem was the sound was less interesting from inside the cabin and the drone was always present. Had that grab 4 years. Finally tried the MPE which I have now. Sounds good, no compliments but it does turn heads. It isn't loud enough for me but I tend to enjoy it more because the I like the difference sounds it makes. Best exhaust experience I've had was my friends gintani catless xpipe with a rear Dinan. No drone, quiet like near stock levels. When you get on it, oh my god! It is loud, exotic and elegant from inside the cabin. I could ride this combo into my 90s. If money was no issue my next steps would be: 1. Test pipes with the MPE if raspy and cheap sounding then 2. Dinan rear and gintani catless The Corsa is also a winner. |
