I've always wanted to know...
if while at speed, and you press the engine on/off button, will your engine shut off? I've been wondering this myself for a while, and I've also been asked this.
Does anyone know what will happen, or been crazy enough to try it?

I'm not about to find out. Some things are best left undone.

Lol... funny you ask this..I've wondered also. One time I was slowwly reversing out of my driveway and I went to close the garage door, but stupidly hit the on/off button on my dct car. It automatically put the car in park and it jerked to a halt. Thank god I was going very slow. I've wondered if I was driving at like 40+ mph, if I or someone hit the on/off button, would the car explode into smithereens.

I'd assume the car would override that order if it deems the speed unsafe to shut off the car or put the passengers in any danger. Who wants to test my guess?

Nothing will other then losing power assist on brakes and steering if the ignition is still on... but for the record ive tried to do this in a loaner 09 328i and it wouldn't work at speed but under about 10-15mph it turned off.

Nope, wrong answers guys...the car will stop if you press the button. (even at speed)
It's an emergency shutdown safety feature in case of an engine fire of some other catastrophic mechanical failure. Not kidding guys, it's there to help you keep a potential problem from escalating.

I have a 6MT, so not sure what would happen if it were in gear when pressed. But my boss has an 328i automatic and one day we were driving on the highway and he asked me what would happen if he pressed the engine on/off button? I really don't know the answer to this one. The first person to definitively find out gets a cookie.

The question is: Does engine shut off if button is pressed? My guess is it does, just like if it was a key, for emergencies (engine fire, low oil pressure, etc). But am not going to volunteer to try it . |

Well I know that it works at 15 mph or less with comfort access...
If you are talking about HIGHWAY SPEEDS, then I would say NO. That could lead to a serious accident, if your car all of a sudden shutdown in the middle of the interstate going 70mph!

I can confirm. At a certain speed and above it does nothing.

Ok, let me confirm that it does shut down the engine at all speeds, but with the clutch in. My previous 335 was having massive engine problems and I have reset the limp mode several times which running at speed. The key is the clutch. With it out, the car will not turn off. With the clutch in, it will.
I don't know how Automoatic cars behave as I don't have one. I would assume that if you put it in neutral, it would do the same thing. |

I would want it to shut the engine off in a DCT car at any speed...imagine the electronic throttle going nuts and jamming open how are you going to stop the car from high speed?
You can't put it in neutral and jamming on the brakes hard is going to be fun. |
