my friends have dedicated track sets and i do see a reason if the rubber is r-comp.
but i don't see a need for another set if
1. you aren't that hardcore tracker/autox-er
2. rubber will wear out quicker since it's handling both track/every day driving and you aren't lazy about replacing rubber when needed
3. stock rims are strong enough

now i do have a question about #3.. are they?
if i don't plan on having r-comp rubber and stock rims are strong enough to handle track abuse (but again, i see people getting budget rims for track use so i'm guessing stock will be at least as strong as budget?), am i missing any other advantages of having another set?
i just don't want to spend extra $1500+ on a set if it's not necessary.

The primary advantages to dedicated track wheels are to have an extra set to switch to so you don't wear out your stock tires, and to get a lighter wheel. Another advantage is if you want to run a square set up for track wheels/tires so you can swap fronts and rears for longer life.

The OEM 18s are strong but they are on the heavy side. As you said, if you are not a hardcore track rat (yet...) and are okay wearing out your stock tires (or don't want to have an extra set) then you will be fine, they are a great choice. Just be prepared to buy new tires in proportion to how often you track.

The stock wheels are plenty strong enough. I have 4 track days on my OEM tires and also 14,000 miles with plenty of tread remaining.

If you're pushing hard the PS2s will get a little squirmy once they get hot (6-8 laps) but they are a good tire and take a lot of abuse.

i may be one of the minority here, but i actually really like the way 18"s look, especially race looking bulging PS2s.
of course there are some rims i'd like to get, but i don't want to lower the car.. so i figured i'd keep the stock 18"s if they are strong enough

your not the only one, I like to OE look as well plus the OE wheels are BBS.

One advantage of a second set of wheels is you can run wider tires in front to dial out some of the understeer. I am using a high permormance summer tire 275/35/18 all around, and I'm leaving this set of wheels on until fall when I will put back on my stock 19s. I just about destroyed the right front tires of my stock 19s with 4 days at the track. My track tires (Kumho Ecsta XS) are great on the track if the pavement is dry, but not appropriate for the wet season in Seattle.
