skier and midlife, why in the world would you not take the E92 to this track??? With its lenght and straight, isn't it a perfect fit for a high power car like the V8??

It's a simple matter of economics. My regular insurance does not now cover me on the track (that happened 2 months after I bought the E92). So then I'm stuck buying track insurance at about $300+ a driver's school (one day school or 3 day school, same price). The track insurance has a 10% deductible so that'd be in the $5500 to $6000 range if I hurt the car. Plus track pads and tires are much more expensive for the E92. When I used stock pads and and tires at Thunderbolt in '08, the pads and tires both got hot after 5 or so laps. The pads then transfered on to the rotors causing vibration, the tires just got squirmy. The pad transfer went away after a few weeks and the tires are still going strong at 22K miles (no long term effects)

I spend $8500 on my '98 M3. It's mechanically sound but the paint isn't all that great. I can get pads and brakes at about half the price of E92 equivalents. And if I trash it, I can afford to walk away from $8500 (not that I'd want to, but I can afford it.

Yes, doing 150+ at Monticello would be fun, but I can have just as much fun in the E36. The E36 is more toss-able in the corners, as well.

I hear ya and as you know, I also have all these consierations in the back of my head, but since I only track a few times a year, I am still fine. I also don't push the car as hard as you do (yet).

See you soon....

Just called Lockton Affinity to ask them to add this event on their list so that we could get insurance for it. Looks like none of the NJ BMW CCA events are on there.

Will keep you posted.

The Monticello school is showing on the Lockton menu.

By the way MTROIS, I'm running the E46 because I have two college tuitions plus a wedding to pay for this year. (I'll be glad just to hang on to the M3.) I'll probably run 5 or 7 fewer days than the 17 track days I ran last year. Fortunately, business is improving. Unfortunately, expenses are rising even faster!

Yes, Lockton added all the NJ chapter CCA events on their schedule!

BTW, although I do not have yet as many expenses as you Midlife, the little addition we had to our family back in January is keeping us plenty busy... and I guess that now we have to start saving for his college studies... although I am planning on sending him to Europe for his studies: it is almost free there and I could end up buying a serious track car with that pool! OK, I can keep dreaming, no?

Nice stuff! Good driving.

I got turn six right once in about 40 attempts when I was there last year! LOL Love the carousel.

Which camera were you using?

It took me a while to get the turns 4/5 and 13/14/15 sequences down although I had it figured out by the fourth session. I didn't have a problem with 6, I found it better in my car to not hit the apex in 6 so I could better line up the braking zone and be able to turn in to 7 quicker.

I was using a cheaper Hitachi model that records to mini DVDs. I wouldn't recommend it because even though it does a good job in the car, I have to change out the disk every session. The other thing I do is have the camera powered from the car battery using a power inverter, so I don't have to worry about charging the camera battery during the day. I'd recommend using a video camera that records to an SD card, so that you can record an entire weekend on one card. HD would be nice, but not required. I did notice that some of the HD cameras do a better job of working in varying light conditions ie. even though it's bright out the windshield it can still do an adequate job of picking up the instrument panel so you can see the tach and speedo.

The day couldn't have been better! Great track, great weather, and I think everybody kept the wheels on the track!

Late in the day, all I could think when hitting 125 in my 328i was how fast I'd be going in the M3! Maybe next year!

It wasgGood to see all the E9X M3's and M3 Post members. There were a few M5s, too.

Indeed, was a great day it was and how nice it was to see everybody again!!

Midlife... indeed, the e92 was really fast all around. I was hitting ~145 at the end of the straight... but I am sure that a lighter car can make some up in the turns.

Anyhow, here are the vids and pics I shot. Enjoy!
