Meetup.com: Weird or Cool?

I've been trying to branch out and meet more people in the last few months. Having gone to a few Meetup groups, its been quite the mixed bag. Some cool folks, but quite a few odd people(beyond what I would have though)

What has everyone else's experience been with Meetup?

Just checked it out...I'm firmly in the campground of it being weird.

My wife and I used to go the the Boston Dachshund MeetUp when we lived back there. It was great. 20 to 30 wiener dogs all running around the Boston Commons. There were some odd folks there but really just a random slice of life. Gather up 30 people and there will always be an oddball or two in the mix. We made some great friends that we still talk to, now 10 years later.

Weirdness is determined to a large extent by what you're meeting up for. So spill the beans, OP, what were these groups focused on?

I never heard of a meetup group but trust MKSixer's assessment.

Yeah, this looks pretty strange to me. Appears to be for people who are into various shit but lack social skills in order to make friends.

Not at all.

I recently moved to a new area and wanted to find people to play volleyball with. Found a group of 50+ that meets up every Saturday in Huntington. Great group of people. Sure, there will be a wide range of people with different backgrounds and social skills but that's life.

Agreed. It's a good way to meet new people who have a common interest as you do and possibly develop friendships. As others have said, weirdness is just a part of life.. Weird coworkers, weird family members, weird people on forums.. You adapt and focus on the good.

Just focus on the interests that you like. Meetups are always a mixed bag.

I met a few organizers and went to a few before. As long as the group is focused on something - i.e. going hiking, playing sports, even meet ups for sports car drives, you tend to get a better result as everyone will be interested in the activity and you will have something in common to talk about.

General meetups like going to happy hour drinks will have a very wide variety of random people.

Making friends after college isn't easy. It's mainly coworkers your age and you branch out from there. If you move to a new city it's even harder.

I'd figure a lot of these meet ups would have odd characters. But hey, all it takes is meeting 2-3 people you get along with and meeting their friends. Grow your circle from there.

There are all sorts of groups and causes on there. In some ways it works. I recommended it to a patient who said she was struggling to find other people who enjoyed hiking. She found a group of ramblers and said it was good. So I recommended it to another patient back in the day and his experience was not as good. He said the people were a bit weird in the spiritual wellbeing group. I guess it can work but the moral of the story is that everyone is someone else's weirdo.

That's actually good to hear. I may end up checking it out then. It does look like most of the groups for the state that I live in or more than an hour away but this may be what I need to get my ass out of the house on occasion and meet some new people.

Do you remember those days when everyone online was a murdered, socially awkward or a freak? My oh my how times have changed.

Things like Bumble, Tinder, Hinge, Facebook, IG are now considered very normal... however; if you try to talk to a woman at a normal setting like a normal person; you're considered the murdered... The world's going down hill quick...

You sir, win the internet today. Congratulations!!
The irony is thick and delicious. The combination of a complete lack of IRL social skills being developed along with shifting norms means that we are now officially living in Bizzaro Land.

Great post!!

I was having a discussion about this just a few weeks ago. Also remember when applying for a job you would physically go inside a building, shake a hand, handover a resume and put a face with a name. A friend of mine's son went for a job interview and talked about how awkward it was to actually have to sit down and talk to someone face to face.

it's only bizarre to us old dudes, MK. To the kids it makes perfect sense. Case in point, I had an employee come to me, upset about the music that was being played in another department. She claimed the song could be deemed offensive. I apologized on behalf of the company that she had been offended and told her I'd look into it immediately. "Oh no, I'm not offended by the song." She said. OK, I'm confused now. So an offensive song was being played that you were not offended by? "Correct. I actually like that song and I don't take offense to it. But I'm offended that the guys in that department who were playing it did not understand that it could be offensive to someone else....But it's not offensive to me."

OK, so what's my standard of living going to be if I retire now at age 44? I've made it 20 years in the workforce and I'm not sure i'm going to make it another 20 at the rate things are going!

i tell my wife of quite a few years that if she ever wants to get rid of me, she should hire a hit man instead of divorcing me. I want no part of the tinder, match.com, backpage, or dating in this "woke" day and age.

Well, maybe backpage (or its successor) would be ok
