Sudden oil consumption after RB replacement
Hi guys,
as mentioned here (https://www.m3post.com/forums/showth...253084&page=34) I had my rod bearings replaced. My engine have never consumed a measurable drop oil between 5k oil changes over 26k miles. On my way down from the shop (230 miles) it suddenly did. Nothing alarming and need to work out details overtime but maybe in the range of 0.3-0-4 liter. I measured both with Carly (which gives a better resolution when it drops) and the cluster. Bit more the first hour to slow down as it seemed. The oil is the same Shell 10W60 I always used (this was called "Supercar" but speced for M cars etc). 9 liter was filled originally, showing half bar. I topped up when down to 1/4. The new bearngs (ACL HX) have more clearance. FWIF the temp was a tad lower (2-3C) on high way after the change which I thought was nice. I can't understand what the rod bearings should have to do at all with the oil consumption, maybe some of the experts can chime in on this? I also wonder if anybody else have noticed an increased oil consumption after RB replacement? UPDATE 27th July: After driving a few days the level seems to have stabilized. Hence you guys where right, after complete drain it takes a little while and top up. Will probably end up filling a good 9.7-9.8 liter to hit Max. Thanks Thanks! If it was in the first 200 miles after an oil change , I would pay no attention since the sensor takes a while to read accurately. If you really are using 1L per 1000 miles you will know soon enough. That would be pretty high for street driving.

Thing is that I've done 5 changes since I got the car and it never consumed anything, I'm talking rock stable. Sensor has always been fine, reflecting a tad low filled while coming up straight after top up. It it a bit strange actually.

My oil level reading with 8.8 liter is at 80% . So your half bar , and down to 1/4 reading with 9 liter is/was actually pretty low .

230 miles is not enough to indicate anything. If the level continues to fall over the next 1,000 miles, then maybe I'd say something is amiss.

Phil, keep in mind the engine drains with the sump off for 24h. There is a tad more oil coming out then compared to a normal oil change. Read that 9.5l is fair after RB change. As we started at 9l flat I believe half bar (31.46 on Carly) is pretty accurat.
The surprise is that it all of a sudden fell from there. Ah well, lets see if some of guys that changes shells chime in. Cheers |

If your car is asking for oil again in the next 500/1000 miles . Something is wrong. Meanwhile I would drive it like usual . But keep an eye on it...

don't sweat it until after your next oil change. a bearing change doesn't touch anything that consumes oil.

Cheers guys. Certainly aware of that the sensor can play trick but as mine has worked fine for years this made me wonder.
I'll enjoy my new bearings for a few days and report back. |

The oil fed to the bearings is recycled to the pan and pump pickup so I am having a hard time understanding how changing rod bearings affects oil consumption.

Helmsman maybe post this in the RB replacement thread to see if others have experienced the same.

I use about 1L/1000km when I drive like an idiot. ~2000km if I baby it. Consumption rate interestingly was higher during highway driving.

I've noticed some wanky readings after RB jobs, most cars bounce around a little before settling after a bit of driving. With the pan off more oil than normal comes out.
Continue to monitor it, but I doubt there is any cause for concern right now.

I had to add some oil twice after rod bearings within the first 2k miles. Haven't had to add any since.
