And what a valuable lesson it was. A 3500 dollar lesson at that! As most of you anticipated, my experiment with a scored crank and new rod bearings has come to an end. Over 2000 miles. It was completely fine for normal driving and likely would have lasted a little longer (maybe), but I was driving it like I stole it last night and heard that awful sound when I parked it. Time for a new motor.

You bet I will! I have a question for everyone a well. What should I expect the labor hours to be for an engine swap?

Bro sorry to hear that, was only a matter of time. There's someone in the for sale section with a $7K running motor. You should factor in more labor than just an engine swap as you should have the shop change the rod bearings in your replacement engine also. I'm sure you don't want to go through this again...

I'll definitely be doing rod bearings again in a new motor the right way. I'm just asking for flat rate on an engine swap because I already have an idea of rod bearings with the engine out. I may even do them myself.

I'm thinking probably not for a couple of reasons. One is that they don't seem to be as problematic as rod bearings and the other is that if I was pulling a crank with the engine out to do mains, I'd just have my current crank re-manufactured and do an engine rebuild on the current motor. The main reason for an engine swap and new rod bearings on that one is to make it an easier job than a rebuild. I'm in the process of purchasing a home so I may even wait and do this myself at some point. I have a 3 mile commute to work and my wife has an X3 so it's really not a huge deal for a while. I just hate being without a car.

Nope. I was in need of a car at the time and now I'm not so it worked out. It was just an extremely expensive way of doing it just to have a car. Would have been better off buying a beater. Results are as expected. It lasted over 2000 miles just fine. It had no issues with normal driving, but it blew from revving it hard too many times and it would have under normal driving eventually anyway.

Alright this is for everyone here. The experiment is back on. I started it to get a video, heard a loud click noise and the noise will NOT come back even when revving. I'm going to keep driving this thing until it's shot and I have no choice but to replace the motor. Call me crazy, but this is going to be fun. I will no longer rev it high though.

He originally spun one of his rod bearings and had a shop just put new ones in and see what happened. His crank was scoured. He went over 2k miles without issue but now maybe it spun again or it was a false alarm. Time will tell.

I'm so confused. I've driven it for two days without any sound whatsoever. It made a small click noise on startup earlier, but nothing that sounded like a bearing. I have had vanos warnings since the original rod bearing failure that I've cleared and they haven't come back, but I doubt the vanos would be as loud as rod bearings. It was kind of a whiny noise also when it happened, but it hasn't come back. This is going to be so much fun. I'll keep this thread updated as I drive it.

EDIT:

This is a perfect example of the sound that came from the vehicle that night, but it also sounded like there was an audible knock to it as well. If this isn't rod bearings (which by the way - the edge of the journal wasn't even polished) then I'd be amazed. Either way it will be interesting to find out.
